Good evening all.

So I'm getting ready to replace the Anode Rod in the Hot Water Tank.
I had a previous post asking about advise and learned a lot.

One thing I'm also going to do is replace the Drain Valve.
Reason: Going with a Ball Valve to get a lot better flow when I do a 'drain' checking for any sediment.

I have County water and don't expect much sediment, but with using a 3/4" Ball Valve, if their is any
garbage in bottom of Tank, it should come out (more so than with factory drain).

I'm thinking of Galvanic Corrosion if I screw a 3/4 x 3" brass nipple into the steel tank.
Yes, the factory Valve is brass so it may not matter to much.

But I can't help but think that I should use a Galvanized/Steel nipple screwed into the Tank (plenty of Sealant)
and then use a Union for joining dissimilar metal would be the way to go.
Then, attach the Ball Valve to the Union.

Question:
Would anybody be worried about screwing a Brass nipple to Water Tank ? ? ?
I would like to purchase the dielectric union, but there $28.00 each.

I did purchase a 3/4" NPT Tap to clean up any threads when I do the Anode Rod and Drain Valve.

Any other options ?

Thank you.

Larry

You're going off the deep end. They always used to be brass before they switched to cheap plastic. I don't even bother draining mine...

Don't over think it. It's just a water heater....

OP here.
Yes I know. ...... HELP ME

Hmm... I thinking it doesn't matter because you have a working anode rod. It probably matters when the anode rod is gone, but then the rest of the tank goes so at that point it doesn't matter.

This link suggests brass nipple: http://terrylove.com/forums/index.php?threads/water-heater-drain-valve.39329/

This link shows brass only ball valve as OEM: http://www.bradfordwhite.com/brass-drain-valve

If you use a conventional full port ball valve, remove the handle so that it cannot be opened easily.

Sleep well tonight.
