Absolutely- if she is of the mindset that she needs a new(er) vehicle on a regular basis, then no, I wouldn't fix it because she will likely never recover her money. However, if she owns the car and wants to drive it to it's grave, then heck yeah- fix it! It will be cheaper in the long run.
 
I would say: Ditch the Optima. Junk it. Why? Because the Toyota Camry Hybrid of around the same model year, is better due to its more elegant clutchless planetary gearbox design vs. the Optima's less elegant 6-speed automatic. So find a good used Toyota Camry Hybrid.
