I wouldn't take the service department's answer as gospel. Many times if they don't see $$$ with your question then you'll get the blow off statement. I'd see if there's something in the owner's manual about enabling the feature which may have been disabled accidentally when OnStar expired. Maybe talk to the service manager about it or keep asking until you get someone that knows what they're talking about. Also as mentioned see about setting it up from scratch.
