2014, 2300 miles, air cooled. Son bought it new. Oil changed a time or two, supposedly. Manual states to change oil regulary, but does not state a viscosity. Intenet searches yield 10W-40 and 15W-40 recommendations. Was thinking Mobil 1 0W-40, lots of it in stash. What say you? Rearend will get 80W-90 dino. Has CVT, 7k redline, 1L oil capacity. Is this a Chonda? Can't remember what oil i used in my 1969 Honda MiniTrail or Trail 70s...

I recall using non-detergent SAE30 in my Honda 70 way back when.. Yikes! These Chinese import GY6s are kind of a Honda copy. Being force fan cooled as opposed to no fan on the Honda 70's, they do well on anything 30, 40 or even 50wt. I'd use what you have. Good reliable little engines provided the rest of the machine, including the wiring and electronics stays together.

M1 OW-40 would be a treat for this engine.
A 15W-40 HDEO would likely work well.
If you have lots of cheap after rebate M1 on hand, use it.
Any cheap 15W-40 should be fine for it.

I've put 18k miles on a Chinese QMB139 with no internal work using Valvoline VR1 20w50 synthetic every 1000 miles.

Hot Florida weather, Cylinder head temps of 250-280°F, WOT all day long. That engine still hasn't needed work yet.

I'm told that this is exceptional for one of these engines.

I second the 20w50 recommendation, especially if its VR-1. That stuff is great in air cooled, high stress motors.
Runner up would be a 15w40.

I use Rotella15w-40 and change it about every 750 miles. I think the Mobil 1 0w-40 is overkill but since you already have it why not. Redline in the gear case? Come on... its a Chonda.

2012 VIP 49cc import here.
I think the last kid just drove it til the ingition switch switched. Maybe a oil change was done.
I seen it ran good for him, I paid 150. Plan to fix it and ride on.

It calls for 15w-40 or 15w-30. I should score some delo sd if I find some.
For now it will see 15w-40 til gone, then sae30/40 20w50 or 25w-40.

My only concern with the 0w-40 would be that it will most likely shear down to a 30wt quickly. But like a few others have said I would never push oil over 1k miles in an air cooled scooter with no real filter.

After seeing what the cylinder head temps are on a cool day, I wouldn't think of running anything less than a 50.

I've recorded 240-260° on a cool night. A 30? No way.
