They probably use Occam's Razor, which is basically that the simpler explanation is the more likely one. In this case, could be bad master cylinder, bad transmission, optical illusion or a few other possibilities. Alien control is probably last on the list.

Possibly a bad transmission? I know those older toyotas don't have brake override systems, and that generation of highlander did have tranny issues(had a 99 Lexus RX300, same platform as the highlander). If the brakes weren't 100% applied it would probably have enough torque to drive the car backwards if the trans had some internal issue.

If you were really pressing hard on the brakes it wouldn't have gone anywhere.
