What could cause a car to need a fuel system flush

Hey, my car is a "classic", and I thought it was a geriatric.

Search "phase separation" Your comments are just not true. Pour 2L H2o in every tank? Umm no

Yeah, a gallon of E10 can handle up to 3.8 teaspoons of water before phase separation, less at lower temperatures. So a 20 gallon tank can handle up to about 12 ounces of water. To hit a liter, your tank would be over 50 gallons and 2 liters would be over 100 gallons. Not too many people with a gas tank that big.

Good info, thanks. Seems like a large amount of water. Dumb question: back before E10, what happened? Didn't water just build in the bottom of the fuel tank, until it reached the pickup level?

3. OLD GAS

3. scam

+1 Any of these but it could be something fed through the fuel lines or just throwing a bottle of techron in the fuel tank. Either way the previous owner probably paid far too much for something that was most likely not needed.

A past due boat payment or a lifetime's worth of low quality fuel being used.

You bought bottles of dry gas which was basically alcohol. Or you kept your tank full. You would get condensation and water in the tank if it wasn't full. It was never really a big problem, more so if the car sat for long periods.
