2008 BMW 650i, 85K intermittent whistling noise

Guys:

Have a good one for you, Problem: Car running fine, pull into garage and car makes a loud whistling noise. Also, RPM increases to 1500 at idle (normally 500). Note: whistle will go away and then RPM will increase and whistle start again. Idle also seemed rough.

Restarted the car and whistle is gone. Drove car last couple of days and no whistle. Called BMW and they said may be VANOS (think that is variable valve system) system malfunction. They say they could look at it but suggest I drive it until it gets worse. Also say it unlikely that a maintenance code was recorded.

Guess I will drive it and see what happens but am uneasy about reliability.

Any thoughts from you guys? Suggestions welcome.

Vacuum leak. Check for a broken hose.

+1.. would be my guess as well.

Crankcase vent valves are done, or the brother hose is cracked.

Typical dealership. Drive until it gets worse and break something expensive so you can pay them more money to fix it.

I also suspect a vacuum leak somewhere. Might be worth taking it to an independent shop with a smoke machine that can test for vacuum leaks.
