So he comes to Thanksgiving in his new Cadillac. Spouts off about his military discount. We go to eat... military discount. He shows me his newly remodeled house... mortgage military discount. Haircut....military discount. Children's college.... military discount. Healthcare.... "I can get whatever pills and tests I want because the want good scores." "You should see the Ambien abuse and fooling around."

Now this is a guy who crashed several cars as a civilian drunk, was a D student at best, dates strippers, and can now do all of this at a discount.

Meanwhile all I do is teach kids how to read and overcome their abusive homes. My reward?...Blamed as the cause of State budget shortfalls and have no dental no vision coverage even offered and a $15,000 deductable.

Facts...not opinion.

I think we ALL should be in the Air Force every single citizen.

Really depends on the person too.

I have two friends who are military, one air force one national guard. The friend in the National Guard has fought in Afghanistan twice, and has a few injuries. She is very humble. She never talks about being in the military. Without knowing her you would never know she was/is a soldier. She originally wanted to become a cop, and use military experience for her career. Due to some unfortunate events/reoccurring issues from when she was deployed, she may not be able to do that now.

The other friend was in the Air Force. He is a very arrogant guy. He joined the Air Force so he could "bang chicks and drive humvees in the sand". He was stationed at Cape Cod where he "guarded stuff". He never went overseas, never fought in a war. He wore his uniform everywhere, even the grocery store. He constantly talks about the Air Force, especially to women. He is out now, and still tries to get a military discount on everything.

With that said, I have heard some extremely corrupt stories about the military from both of them about rape, misuse of power, command not taking care of dangerous people/situations on bases, etc. I have a high respect for most people (read non-arrogant) in the military. They have a difficult job and it's not one I would want to do. I usually find that the more service they have given (IE going overseas) the less likely they are to be arrogant people looking for attention, because they have seen stuff we would never want to imagine.

I'm not from a military background and truly don't know this so I ask the question, what percentage of our military personnel make a sacrifice and what exactly is it? Being deployed and in combat situations obviously but how many (percentage) end up in a 9-5 support job that happens to be with Uncle Sugar? Are there other sacrifices civilians don't know about? thanks

100% - EVERYONE in the military can be put in harms way at a moments notice. Keep in mind that even in peacetime, most jobs in the military are the most dangerous there is.

You mention civilians, I think you mean Government employed civilians. I'm not going there as I've never been one.

Just about all Dept of State employees can be sent out as well. When I worked at DoS I was told to report to a auditorium. There me and another 100 or so were told we would be sent to either Portsmouth NH or New Orleans LA. All were given a card to pick which one they prefer but were told it was first come first serve. After 1 city got full everyone else went to the other.

When the more recent Gulf war was ongoing many DoS people were shipped there.

So its not just the Military, many civil service are also sent. Many times against what they want. But when you get a job at DoS that is told to all new people. But they do have the option to quit if they don't like it. So that's one military may not have. Short of AWOL that is.

The topic is health care.

No, I do not think a military type of health system would be a good replacement.

The average citizen doesn't make the sacrifice that those in the military do, the military system is NOT designed for the average person.

It would take me twenty typed pages to tell of all the horror stories over the years.

Strongly, I say again, no!

Sam is privy to how much working and middle class coworkers are paid and how much health insurance costs them. And who has insurance and who doesn't have insurance.

Monday at lunch I'll ask about horror stories.

Even though a Colonel (O-6) with a couple years in grade makes decent money it's nowhere near what a MD specialist should be making. Their base pay isn't in six figures until they are in over a decade.

From my limited experience with the USAF health care system, it gets the job done but I prefer the civilian version. Also keep in mind that service members still pay insurance for dependants and they go off base to civilian doctors.
