Or why you added 2 quarts when only 1 is required when the add oil light comes on.

I suspect you are overfilled and have a turbo seal starting to go, maybe a PCV issue, but I'm not sure without knowing how often you actually add oil. Consumption on the Turbo models can be quite high to begin witb.

Total 0W-40 is a good oil, on par with other Euro oils. I would use Castrol 0W-40 for your next change and note how often you actually need to add oil and under what conditions you see the smoke.
Start here !!!

I'm honestly more shocked that the owner is 600 miles in on a used vehicle he bought which had what, 8,000 miles since the last OC at the time of purchase. Why wasn't at least an oil change worked into the deal? Was this a private person to person sale or dealership? Either way, I'm shocked as even the cheapest cars on Craigslist mention that the vehicle has new this, new that and a recent OIL CHANGE just for the sale. And here we have an expensive Porsche which was sold with probably year old Lube and even the new owner didn't bother to change it ASAP.

Didn't expect it from a BITOG-er from 2012. You probably don't spend much time on here, seeing by your few recent posts.

Definitely start by changing the oil and monitor the consumption from there.

If the sale was person to person, I'd also contact the seller and ask if he was aware of the oil consumption because they clearly sold you a bad car and had to have known about it.

If this keeps up, you'll have a Porsche that sky writes. Like others have said get a proper oil change with Porsche spec oil, filter and new PCV, then see what happens. If the consumption is still outrageous, get ready to go to a specialist.
Or drive it and let it guzzle the cheapest A3 oil you can find.

Sucky thing for the op,this may be the very reason the previous owner got rid of it.

baring major mechanical issues a heavier oil may help, think 15-50 or even 20-50 as less spread is better. being in calif + depending on your temps you surely do not need an O or even a 5 W oil. cheap rotella T may be an option as well. my 2001 TT 225Q with performance upgrades hits 25lb boost uses a qt in less than a thousand miles + with only 4.25 qts in the engine i keep a close eye on it. switched from 10-30 to 10-40 that helped + in the summer i started to top it off with 20-50 + i could see less consumption. Redline recommends their 15-50 for turbos + i think that will be my next move as all 20-50 will not start in Pa winters but a 15-50 prolly will, i use all synthetic oils, some the fake group III + the rest is Redline prolly one of the very best oils made, not refined. good luck

Well there's an insightful post. You dont know anything about the motor or spec but throw Rotella in it. OR, maybe its not the oils fault. Even if it was past due for an oil change, it shouldn't smoke.

I would suspect the turbos might have CHRA issues. I'd do 5k changes with 10w40 M1 HM and monitor the level closely over the oil change. You may not have any seal issue that a high mileage or a different brand oil can change.

And they would likely tell him to pound sand OR not pick up the phone. They aren't going to doing anything positive about so I'd write it off and work with the cards you are currently dealt.

Did OCI with Castrol Edge 0W-40. The startup puffs of smoke went way down, with the new fill. The old oil is being sent to Blackstone as I write this...

Glad to hear your consumption has been reduced. After some time, once you log your consumption and if the smoke does not altogether stop, you may want to try some Liqui Moly Motor Oil Saver; I don't usually hock additives but it has worked in a few cars to lessen and stop valve stem seals and turbo seals.

I heeded your advice. I added the Lubro Moly product 2x 300ml bottles. At cold start the oil pickup has a tough time... but after warm-up the motor is so smooth and whisper quiet!

Has your smoking stopped? It usually takes a few hundred miles to take max effect, in my experience.

Get it on the highway this weekend, get it nice and hot for a few hundred miles! You know you've been wanting to go to (insert restaurant/brewery/mall/shooting range here) for forever!

Yea a 10 mile round trip isn't going to get that engine / oil hot enough to help burn off whatever carbon buildup you've got going on. Take a joyride and go do an Italian Tune-up to get the block nice and HOT. Rev the [censored] out of it while accelerating onto the highway. I bet you'll see a cloud of smoke in your rear view as junk is barbecue'd off.

This will either

A: help tremendously

or

B: increase consumption to the point that you'll be adding more oil then gas to the car. Hahahahaha

In my experience with multiple old vehicles, the Italian Tune-up helped the engine run better and feel alive again. Consumption decreased tremendously after junk burned off the piston rings and as a result, they began to seal properly again.

Just my $0.02 cents on the matter.

P.S. I would have thrashed it and revved it to the moon during my test drive BEFORE I would have bought it. That way, if she blows while getting on the highway, you can walk back to your car and go buy something BETTER, because clearly that one is a POS.
