HF sold a decent Russian cast steel anvil a few years back for cheap. Anyone know where something similar might be found today?

Do you need a true anvil with a pritchel hole, hardy hole and horn? If not, there are a lot of poor man's anvils around that are relatively inexpensive. If you're really creative you can fashion a horn with a little work and a torch and grinder. Unless you're doing real forging work a poor man's anvil will handle just about anything you can throw at it.

And sometimes EXPENSIVE too.

Locally any serious anvil is selling for more than $600. The cheap HF one has a few people that added a plate on top to make it stronger. That sounds like a better option if you don't wanna break the bank.

Cast iron anvils are bad, no?
