I have the electronic control 4WD system in my F250. What exactly is engaged when I go into 4WD? Obviously front and rear axles, but are axle shafts side to side also locked? In both axles or one?

You cannot run this in 4WD on dry roads.

The front diff is an open diff. The rear axle has electronic locking or limited slip if you optioned them. You can manually lock the front hubs correct?

It should have vacuum hubs on the front. There is a solenoid in the engine bay and vacuum lines that run down to the hubs. Then there is the motor on the transfer case to shift it.

As long as the pump for the hubs is working, leaving them in auto lets them spin when in 2wd and locks them when you engage 4wd. The "lock" setting is for you to engage them manually if the system were to malfunction.
