I plan on using 15/40 delo in all my air cool engines. Who makes the thinnest 15/40 or am I just chasing rabbits.

Where you live the 15w40 will be great, and you don't need to look for a "light" one. Use a semi or full synthetic and you are all set.

Mobil 1 0w40 will end up being 12cst instead of *w30's which are aprrox 10cst @ 100deg C.

5w40's or 15w40's tend to be 13 to 14 cst @100 deg.

Even some 0w30's (Castrol) are 12cst@100deg.

Last 2 jugs of Mobil 1 0w40 were $25 at Walmart less the $12 rebate.

You might consider a HDEO 10W-30.
Still, a 15W-40 would work well in your climate. Many OPE users favor this grade.

+1

5W-40 is thinner than most full 15W-40's at cold start so it splashes around easier.

The 40 side is not really "thick" as I've noted by oil pressure comparisons in a couple of my engines. It's a few PSI less at hot idle. Leaves me to believe it's more a 35'ish when hot

Why?

Then choose a 10w-30 HDEO or a monograde SAE 30, as the case may be, which will have sufficiently high HTHS. A CJ-4 15w-40 is not going to be a thin 40 grade by any stretch of the imagination.

I use Rotella T5 semi synthetic in my Snapper rear engine rider esp in the fall when I'm doing leaves and the weather is cooler. Noticeably easier to start up in cold weather.

Been buying Delvac for $13/gallon lately - might be making room for the K version that I don't necessarily need ...
