Got a new regular fram filter for my 06 dodge... 9401 I believe is the part number. The new one is the shorter one. Fits fine, no issue. Tall one is marked ca9401 made in Mexico and the new shorter one is marked ca9401 made in USA. Why is the filter so short? It's literally half the height of the one I have installed now... thinking of taking it back to Walmart and seeing what the others look like. What's your opinion? No big deal or should the pleats be longer like the old one?

Not sure. Only ever used fram. Either this is how they're made now or I got a bad one?

Why is the filter marked "9401" in the photo? Was the old filter a 9401, or just a 940?

I say this because large national resellers, Walmart in particular does this, will contract with manufacturers for a unique part with a unique-to-Walmart configuration. There are two reasons for this; the first being the obvious one, it can then be sold cheaper and it's hoped the consumer won't notice it's different from what you would buy elsewhere, and the second is the unique part number means there can't be a price match since no-one else actually sells the exact item, which is a criteria for Price Match.

You perhaps should take that filter to some other store ... an Auto Parts specialist, for example ... and compare their FRAM 940 with your Walmart unit, before you take it back (if that's what you are planning to do). You may find the "normal" FRAM unit to be the size you are used to.

Not saying the above is necessarily the case, since I am not a user of FRAM filters, let alone that part #, but it's a possible explanation. If you learn something, please post here for others to learn from as well.

I tried a Fram air filter for my Liberty and I couldn't close the air filter box. The same for a Purolator, which I had my doubts about using anyway. I ordered a Mopar filter and it fit fine.

Yes, I find the Mopar filters to be of excellent construction and very competitively priced. The Oil Filter for my 5.2L Magnum engine equipped truck is under $C 4.50 at the dealer ($US 3.36).

Same here. I wasn't going to shave the rubber gasket down to make it fit. It will be OE air filters for my Liberty.

Have a fram in the Nissan - all good; bought a fram for the Subaru - airbox wouldn't close - hard plastic frame was warped to the extent the box wouldn't close!

Does the above shallower unit have same pleat count? maybe fits multiple apps - one app requires a shallower form?

I too had to trim the rubber gasket from a Fram air filter to make it fit.

At Walmart now.. every fram including the tough guard is the same thickness... guess it's just how they're designed now. If they're all the same I'll go ahead and use one

Exact same issue. I bought a Fram for my 1500 in 2012 as a back up for the K&N I am using. My father has a 2015 1500 and recently bought a Fram for it and commented in how it looked different to the factory filter. I compared it to my Fram and there was the same thickness difference.

ended up getting a Delco off of rock auto. flows great, but just as thin as the fram i returned

and also faster dropping off the filter. you know since we use the restriction gauge. we wont change the filter until it tells to change. thats why the manufacturer make it less paper media.
