There is no reason to go 15W-40 in summer. The 15W does not buy you anything. The 40 at op temp is what you are after and Rotella T6 makes that well enough. The 5W will allow easy starts anytime as long as the battery and the wiring are decent

You're quite right, but here's a "Did You Know?" for the BITOG members... Buick developed this engine into a V6, which, as the link describes was what became the 'legendary' Buick 3800 V6.

OP, being in NJ probably advisable to go with Rotella 5w40. Its a good Diesel oil, important for these later Rover V8's, as they do run on the hotter side. Being an older push-rod engine of 1960's origin, it may be somewhat prone to sludge, so this oil should do well.
If you were in Australia, then despite my qualms with Penrite's marketing, I'd recommend one of their oils - as they do legitimately contain a strong zinc additive package. What I've read on AULRO forums, most are pushing an xW-40 or xW-50 of some sort.

I'm sure this has been considered, are you getting the "top-hat" cylinder liners fitted to the engine to alleviate the well-known issue of slipped cylinder liners?
Which really leads me to the next point - Use the OE-type coolant and change it OFTEN. These blocks are apparently known for corrosion issues.

In the UK everybody calls them Rover V8s, even though most people are aware the design was made by Buick, TVR used them because the block and heads are extremely light for a V8 and therr are tons of engine builders that specialise in them.



The engine was redesigned before entering production. The Buick version of the engine design was never produced by Rover or fitted to a production vehicle.

The Rover version was stronger and heavier than the Buick engine.

I don't think the US buyer liked the alloy construction, there is no doubt that GM could have engineered out the problems if they had the inclination to.

But they didn't.

Consider this. The 2.7tdv6 and 3.0tdv6 engines found in Land Rovers, Range Rovers, Jaguars and Citroen/Peugeots.

They were a joint development that included Jaguar/PSA/Ford and the engines are built mostly in Dagenham at the Ford engine works.

Though some people still refer to those engines as PSA engines.

So am I correct to say Rotella T4 15w/40 is a little too think for NJ winters?

At this point planning on the Rotella T6 5w/40 all year....
