I've seen some old-school recipes using oxalic acid to flush radiators. Anyone here have any experience using this stuff to clean rads? I have an old tractor cooling system to clean, and was wondering how effective this would be. Most of the store-bought stuff is too weak to do much.

Since it is an old tractor brass and steel oxalic acid will work well. I used to use it all the time years ago. Then it was usually fix the leaks.

My father used it during the 1970s. He had a 1971 Toyota Corolla that he failed to properly maintain the cooling system.

He said it was incredibly effective. Practically all the sludge was gone, and once he maintained his car properly, his engine stayed clean.

Good point. Back when my dad used used the oxalic acid in his Toyota, the kit included a chemical that was called the "deactivator."
