Looks like about #14 wire, so use the blue terminals. The ground bolt looks like an M6, so 1/4 inch hole.

Absolutely brilliant by VW to put wiring underneath the battery where acid will drip on it.
 
Yep. 14 or 12 ga. It's impossible to make a ground too big. I'd use 12 if that were me. 1/4" ring looks right.
 
If it's easy to get where you live, I suggested marine-grade 14 AWG wire. Marine grade wire has individually tinned copper strands and pressure-applied insulation to better resist corrosion, especially when moisture and acid might wick up the strands. It's expensive enough that it's not used when doing a new build, but it's definitely worthwhile when fixing a known problem area.
