Hello everyone new to the site and have been reading post about oils of the same viscosity being thinner or thicker that oils of the same viscosity. How do you tell a thin oil from a thick oil?

Google SAE viscosity table...

Certain sae grades are within certain limits (from/to)...

Knowing cst number at 100 C for particular oil will tel you wetter this oil is more on thicker or thinner side of SAE grade

That's Just tolerance of a Narrow Range in a Class of viscosity, since they are mostly spread from each other in units 10 magnitude "weights", on the operation temperature side (not the Winter side).

J300 used until recently SAE 10, SAE 20, SAE 30, 40, 50 and so on. For example, THERE'S NO SAE 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, so there's must be a range inside a class (20 in this case) separating a class from other classe to the next.

Now you see SAE 8 and SAE 16 and a new revision comes ...

What you do is download the Product Data Sheet and look at the cSt numbers. A 5W-30 or a 10W-30 with a cSt number above 11.9 at 100C would be considered a heavy 30 weight.

Thanks for the Replies guys.
