Motul uses different base oils just like Castrol and most everyone else. The Motul oil your are questioning appears to be a group III oil.

+1 this Motul is probably gr3, maybe with a small part of pao.
I prefer the 0W40 8100 (X-Max) over the 5W40, but it is much more expensive and hard to find.

I believe the Motul 8100 X-cess is advertised in Germany as a full synthetic, so it should be group IV and V primarily.

Here's the latest MSDS for Castrol...

If I'm understanding those MSDS's correctly,it looks like they're both grp III oils?

Same as what I'm understanding... I was very skeptical that BP could manufacture an oil mostly based on PAO and sell it for 23 dollars at Walmart.

I stand corrected after looking into it in the book, Polymers: A Property Database... Castrol is PAO based.

I'm still curious how they can sell it so cheap at Walmart?

Check the Castrol MSDS again. While we must remember that an MSDS is not a recipe, I see nothing in there indicating that this is a primarily Group III product, and I see indications that there is PAO in it, on top of all that.

And yes, companies can market a primarily PAO oil for $25 a jug, even up here. They can do it for half that yet again, if they really want to, and do so up here, as well. Just because boutiques think that PAO means $15 a quart doesn't mean that applies to everyone.

No problem. With the Delvac 1 I use, for instance, I pay $5 to $6 a litre for it, which is an extraordinary deal up here. A certain big equipment company here buys it from the same supplier for half of what I pay, because of the quantities they purchase.
