My f250 uses oil. According to the owners manual 750 Mile's per qt is ok. It drank 5w40 like it was free! 200 miles to a qt. Delo 15w40 gets 450 miles per qt. Delvac and supertech 600 miles per qt.

Napa 15w40 goes 1000+ miles per qt! I would have never guessed it would make that big of a change

Sounds like your motor "agrees" with Valvoline 15W40. I've talked with a few fellow Truckers who've noticed one brand of oil has less consumption vs other brands, although the brand of oil may differ from one engine to another.

I have a longtime friend who grew up row crop farming with his dad. His dad always ran Valvoline HDEO in their old Case International tractor. It's since been sold to another friend who uses it on his farm to this day.

only 1998 and newer needs to be smogged. Older stuff like my smoke rolling idi are 100% exempt. Guess the state knew they smoked and there was nothing they can do about it unless the state wanted to buy every one a turbo

That's really good! I used both 15W40 Delo 400 and Phillips 66 Super HD-II in my non turbo 1990 7.3. It was ages ago, but I don't think one brand showed more consumption than the other.

Mobil Delvac Super 1300 15W40 really seems to agree with my Detroit Series 60, I have very little, if any consumption at 15,000 pm intervals. I use the 10W30 Delvac Elite semi-syn during the coldest part of winter, and no difference in comsumption using it, either.

You've found a Winner for your truck. My friend and his Dad used nothing but 15W40 Valvoline in their Case International farm tractor since the 70's. That tractor is still farming to this day. Great HDEO!

I still have a few gallons of NAPA 15W40 left in my 55 gallon drum. I used most of that drum for five oci's in one of my Cat powered trucks and it did fine. I only ran about 22k mile oci's but the TBN was still in good shape and had consistent results. It was CJ-4 rated oil.

I'm slowly using it up in one of my lawn mowers now.

I'd give this a shot. Your climate is good for it year round and if your truck likes 15w40, perhaps some of the high mileage additives could help with some the seals.

What is with the auto/pickup OEM's and their oil consumption allowances? My factory remanned 12.7L Detroit 60 with 606,000 miles on the reman uses about 2 qt in 20,000 miles. Yet auto and pickup OEM's seem to think that 1 qt per 1000 mile is still tolerable. Really doesn't speak well to the quality of their motors. I have had heavy commercial engines of twice more more displacement only use 1 qt in 2000 miles with almost 1.5 million miles on them. Maybe the auto and pickup OEM's ought to pick up the phone and give the heavy engine guys a call and learn a thing or two.

Cost and usage. A Subaru Outback (or whatever passenger car you want to talk about) is built to hit a price point and material and production costs have to cross on the x/y axis. A modern Detroit Diesel/Cat/Cummins engine etc costs way more that most disposable passenger car engines because the usage and expectation is 500k miles plus.

Also passenger cars have many more stop start/heat cycles/ city miles etc that contribute to more oil usage than an 18 wheeler.

Lastly, that being said while 1 qt per 1000 is the official standard for a lot of OEMs, MANY MANY people use no appreciable amount of oil during their entire 10k mile interval and don't have to add a drop.

The OM906LA in my U500 Unimog has consumed 1L/2500mi since new. No matter whether Delo 400 15W40 or Delvac 1 SHC 5W40. My last UOA at 17500mi showed 36ppm Fe, 1ppm Cr. My next UOA will be at 27000mi, I anticipate 50ppm Fe. I don't mind the oil consumption, it keeps the TBN up. It is not a cheapo engine.

That the IH or any engine would show that much reduction on a brand of oil meeting the same API and SAE spec and grade is impressive.
Who would have thought it?
If I ever own an old IH powered Ford, I'll know what to use.
