Hi, i just picked up a mossberg 500 12 gauge pump shotgun. I am looking for suggestions on low recoil 00 buckshot. I was going to buy Fiocchi rounds however they are sould out in store and online. Any suggestions? This is for home defense use. Thanks

This one is easy.

Federal, Winchester Ranger, Remington, or Hornady.

Most low recoil rounds will come with a flite control wad. Hornady buys and uses the Federal flite control wads, but calls them Versatite wads. I can do with or without a flite control wad. It basically acts like a slug out to about 15 yards or so, which is much further than most home defense situations.

The low recoil Federal #1 buckshot load is considered the king of the hill defensive load. It can be hard to find at times. Part number LE132-1B

Federal H132 00 comes with a regular wad (not flite control) which would offer a better spread at home defense distances, and is probably my favorite up close and personal 00 buck load.

Fiocchi is a yes, and a no. Reason being, they make ammo in American and in Italy. The ones made in Italy will have a European roll crimp, which makes the shell longer, which therefor causes your gun to lose one round capacity. I tend to avoid European crimp shotgun ammo for defensive use for that very reason. I only use it for plinking, blasting, or hunting in a pinch.

If you are worried about over penetration, or live in an apartment, then I highly recommend #4 buck.

In stock - $175 (with free shipping) for 250 rounds.

The federal flight control is some really good stuff, just make sure to test the pattern with your specific setup. It's usually one of the best choices

I use a Hornaday Varmint Express #4 buck for my first round, and Fiocchi nickel plated low recoil 00 buck for rounds two through six. I prefer not to have a flight control wad as I want some pattern spread in the close distances inside a house. The Fiocchi gives me a 4" pattern at six yards, and a 7" pattern at 10 yards in my Remy 870 tactical 12 ga. The Hornady #4 is somewhat tighter, and I keep this as my first round because it is much more likely that I will need to dispatch a groundhog than a bad guy.

Do your research. Plenty of gelatin tests on Youtube.
Don't discount #4 buck at conversational range.

Buckshot can be found around here, almost at any corner store, for a reasonable price.

Shop around, and if you find some you like see if you can save up and purchase in bulk.(But that goes for any ammo)

My LGS had 00buck 2.75" shells for $4.99/box of 25 so I bought 25 boxes. They kick pretty good but for .20/shot who cares.

It's got the Flite control wadding that hold the pattern tighter at distance for more lethality.

+1, worked the best for my SG, poa/poi at 25 yds, group was a nice and tight 12'(cylinder or improved cylinder choke is required for flight control wad)~ and it is a pleasure to shoot.
