I got one gas that was 87 octane and it was light tan in color. The other is greenish and is 90 octane. Each is from a different gas station. I was trying to test each fuel for ethanol so thats why there is a water layer on the bottom. Also noticed the greenish 90 octane gas has a "bubble" layer even after several minutes of settling after shaking the bottles. The 87 octane did not exhibit this.

So couple of questions:

1. Is there reason to be concerned about either? What color is E0 gas suppose to be?
2. Because of the "bubble" layer, does this indicate a presence of ethanol?

Also forgot to mention these two samples were taken from the stations within the past week, but not sure how long it's been sitting in their underground tank. The ethenol free gas pumps don't get a lot of traffic so it may have been sitting there a while.

There is no normal "color" for unleaded gasoline because it's typically not dyed.

The more yellowish sample is indicative of a blend with a greater concentration of olefins.

Ethanol is also undyed. No way of detecting its presence or absence via color.

The color specification for unleaded gasoline is typically "Undyed" and appearance "Clear & Bright" (C&B).
