Given that the sump in my X5 holds 9 quarts and eats through about 2 quarts during the OCI, I've decided I need to start factoring cost into my oil changes. Right now, it is between Mobil 1 0W-40 "FS" and Castrol Edge 0W-40 (black bottle with fluid titanium). Both are ~$23 per 5 quart jug and are A3/B4 oils.
Castrol states it is "three times stronger against viscosity breakdown than the leading synthetic." Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 EP were included in that test (this was only for 5W-30 weight, though). Castrol also has its proprietary titanium additive, and it's used by Koenigsegg One:1 (1,341 horsepower...). The Mobil is a bit thinner, but with a high VI and better cold-start viscosity. I couldn't find any UOA results with the new M1 "FS" 0W-40. Since it is already starting as a thick 0W-30, I am concerned about it shearing down.
M1:
KV40: 71.0
KV100: 12.9
VI: 186
Castrol:
KV40: 79.3
KV100: 13.5
VI: 169
Would love to hear your opinions. It will be used during the winter here in Portland, OR: high 20F to high 30F in the morning.
