Hello all. My mom has a 2013 Passat with the 2.5L motor. She drives very little and it has about 6,500 total miles. She had the 10,000 mile service done on it about a year or so ago so the oil was changed along with the filter by the dealer. I don't drive german cars anymore so I don't know if she should go with the mileage total or for time regarding oil changes etc. Also, since it is out of warranty, any recommendations on oil and filters from a DYI standpoint? I looked thru the owners manual and it stated 5w-40 or 5w-30 synthetic rated for VW. I do all my own vehicles maintenance so doing her's won't be a big added burden. Thanks.

Welcome to Bitog! Id go with something with the VW approval first and weight. Think there are a few off the shelf oils (cheap, avail at WM) you can use, will let the others advise of them.

I would run Castrol 0W-40 or 5W-40 and a Mann/Mahle/Hengst filter on her Passat.

The manufacturer's recommended interval for oil and filter is 1yr/10k miles.

Cabin filter is 2yr/20k miles.

Plugs and air filter are 40k items.

Transmission drain and fill is 50k miles, with filter at 100k.

Its 10K or 1 year whichever comes first. As far as oil choice goes use either M1 0w40 or Castrol 0w40/5w40, all available at Walmart for a great price.

You MUST use a VW-approved oil. M1 0w40 probably meets the standards and is the easiest to get. Castrol 0w30 and 0w40 should be good too, if they meet the required spec.

As for filters, stick to
Mann HU 719/6x
Mahle OX379D
Hengst E27H
Purflux L362
Wix/Napa Gold (Wix 57187 or Napa 7187)
Wix XP/Napa Platinum (Wix 57187XP or Napa 47187)

The OEM VW filter is most likely a Mann or Mahle

If you can find M1 on sale with the oil change deal, there's also the M1C-451 with metal end caps, unusual for a cartridge

If it has been maintained by the book I don't see why the powertrain warranty would be expired. Should be 60 months/60,000 miles: http://www.autobytel.com/volkswagen/passat/2013/warranty/

She should have also had 3 free services:

Oil, filter, and rotation at 1/2/3yr or 10/20/30k, with the cabin filter and brake flush at 2yr/20k.

If she purchased it new and only had one service she missed out.

Sometimes major auto part store chains will have a "Buy 5 quarts and get a filter" sale. This can work to your advantage if you use a cartridge filer, as they tend to cost more than spin on filters. When you need more than 5 quarts, extra quarts are sold at a discount price.

This is often how I get my Castrol 0w40 for my car, and Castrol 0w40 is perfect for a VW 2.5L. Sometimes M1 goes on sale and you can use their 0w40. Valvoline makes a 5w40 oil that also goes on sale sometimes.

Some VW specialist websites will sell you a kit that includes the correct oil, a premium grade filter, and a new drain plug gasket in one package.

Cartridge filters for these engines are often quite costly. Some VW specialist websites sell bulk packs that save a lot of money.

+1

Yeh, she missed out on the free services from the dealer. She got just the one performed because she drove so little in a years time. I ran across the 0w-40 at WW but I also found the link to ECS Tuning. I would guess that even the lowest priced oil change kit from them would be fine. It also comes with the oil, filter, and plug. In the case of cost, $34.00 isn't bad.
