Will be picking up my new MX-5 2.0 today.
I need to know what others are using in this engine.
I've been using Mobil 1 0W40 in my other car. I'm hoping to use the
Mobil 1 in the MX5 as well.

What manual says?

Manual calls for 0W20, I guess I'm "old school" when it comes to oil.
Thanks, will be using OEM filters unless there is others that are proven
better. Also this will be a weekend car and not going to do mid-west winter
driving.

Most of my vehicles call for 0w or 5w 20
Often times I use 5w because 0w sometimes has a price difference of +8 a jug.
Not really a big deal but 5w also gives you many more choices..

I race a 2009 MX-5. The previous owner ran 5w20 Mobil 1 for racing and didn't have any issues except for possibly some extra wear. The earlier miatas would run 50wt oil for track use but the recommendation for the NC miatas is split between 20wt and 30wt for track use. If I were running it on the street I would just stick to the recommended 5w20.

There are more synthetic 5w20's than 0w20's on the market.
Meaning more choices. Sure 0w20 dictates synthetic but you act like 5w20's are mostly blends.

Synthetic 0W20(M1 or Castrol Edge or any name brand) once a year with either Mazda oil filter or Wix or Fram Ultra.

Your yearly cost of oil+filter is about $35-40, almost nothing for your Miata.

One blend here....... its the 5w30
Notice the price?
Wally does it too- maybe not today but they do it.
This is from Amazon
And the 10w30 is a blend as well and most of the time its the 0w20 price or higher.
This is for those here that say differing weights all cost the same as long as its the same company..
Nope! Of course last week 0w20 was on sale- not now.

Stick with the specified 0W-20 grade.
The Idemitsu made very high VI Mazda brand High Moly 0W-20 would be an excellent choice.
It's only available in quart bottles and the Mazda parts department may have to order it in.

A second choice that may be a bit cheaper would be the Mobil made Toyota Brand 0W-20 and every Toyota and Lexus dealership carries it.

A third choice would be the new Castrol GTX Magnetec 0W-20.
