Wanted to try some conventional ST to see how it would hold up as I was running low on some of my thinner oils for the relatively mild "winter" here in north Florida. I bought this truck from the original owners who'd had it dealership serviced including oil changes every 3,000 since new. I have many many more samples to upload for this truck. Interestingly enough the switch to 5w30 oil from the previously used 10w40 netted about a 1.5-2.5 MPG incrase, with either oil the truck has 75-85 PSI of oil pressure at hwy speeds, considering a 5w20 on the next OCI. Current fill is Liqui Moly 10w40 MOS2 with a return to the previous mileage loss noted with the 10w40. Total engine miles at time of sample were 312,391, engine has never been rebuilt, but did have a valve job around 277k. This run could've easily gone 5,000 miles imho.

Any reason why? The truck has stellar oil pressure even on a 5w30 and there is a remarkable change in MPG when even running a Xw40/50 even in the 90-100 degree heat of summer here, the oil pump is on the oil pressure relief by 2000-2500 RPM and stays there, still has 25 PSI at idle and over 50 psi by 1500 rpm. I was thinking with that kind of oil pressure I could save some energy not pushing oil through the pumps relief valve considering the truck goes down the HWY at 3400 rpm at 75 MPH. I was thinking there'd still be sufficient margin in terms of oil pressure even with the thinner oil. I do understand that 5w20 is outside the Toyota recommendation for this engine.

Don't listen to Merk's comments. He would tell ya' 20w50 would work well. My stepdad has one of these vehicles and uses ST syn 5w30 at 5k oci's

I actually have a few samples with 20w50 in Valvoline Motorcycle and 20w50 Wolfs Head, I'll post those two up next for comparision, I'm just working through posting the 15+ samples I have for this truck over the past 5 years.

Interesting to see those

What's the oil pressure at hot idle with the water temperature at about 185 to 195 F ?

25 psi with water temp of 185 which is as hot as it ever gets on the highway even in 100 ambient, runs about 180 around town has the same pressure, about 25 hot on 5w30. Not much different on 10w40 or 20w50 about 2-3 psi more for every 10 increase in oil viscosity.

My Buick is 39 to 42 PSI at hot idle and bumps up to 64 to 67 PSI motoring down the road at 35 MPH.

Cold start up with the water temperature at 90 F the oil pressure is 66 to 67 PSI.

That's darn good idle pressure, the 4Runner has 80# on the relief at any rpm over 2500 once the oil is warm, until it warms up it has 75 even at an idle.
