I did a 0w20 synthetic oil change on a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid at 236,000 km as part of a maintenance package. The oil filter I took out was a Service Champ OF4622. I didn't cut open the filter, since this particular filter was cut many times from other posts in the past. This is what it looked like from the top:

Given no surprises, since this OF4622 I took out was essentially a Fram Extra Guard oil filter with a different paint job. Quite a coincidence given the fact I replaced that with a Fram PH7317 oil filter. I mean after all, my dad and I used Fram oil filters in our daily-driven vehicles. But looking back at the OF4622s I saw and installed in the past, I have to admit I am very surprised. I'll let these photos do the talking and I'll let you give your honest opinions if you encountered them.

113015, which is November 30, 2015. The one I cut open was dated for August. Kind of odd seeing a design change in the last few months. As Run said, cut them open.

To tell you the truth, I don't want to cut open a brand-new filter since it was in inventory. But if you want me to cut open that used OF4622 oil filter, sure. I'll give it a try.

Perhaps the media is different in the Service Champ, ie. not rated as efficient as an orange can. But as far as construction I'll say basically the same as said orange can 6607. Awhile back car51 posted a Champ Labs 2808 HERE that is also classic orange can construction. Champ Labs, Service Champ closely related jobber tier filters.

Not sure if just some applications of CL and SC have gone Fram Fiber construction, or all now. Do know last time I checked AZ STP S2808 is now fiber endcap construction where used to be Champ metal endcap design. Other STPs though were still Champ with some ecores.

So no real need to cut open an unused orange can if you choose not to. Could cut open the SC for reference but betting it will look like orange can construction.

Curious what you meant by "as part of a service package"? That mean a dealer used the SC filter? Imo, wise to use the longer 7317 a replacement. Quick lubes and some indies like to use the consolidated 6607 shorty.

I was only asking about the used one, to confirm it is the same. It probably is the same as the new orange can, but there is a w in the number, whatever that means. No matter really one way or the other.

come on... just get over your paranoia and cut open that new filter...it will feel so good once you cut your first brand new virgin filter... plus that fram is not a premium filter...if it was a an XG6607 i could understand your reservation, but a PH6607 shouldn't hurt too much

A service package consists of an oil change, a brake inspection, a tire rotation, and an under-vehicle inspection. As for the filter I took out, the previous oil change was done in a quick-lube shop. I wasn't surprised since I saw a few Fords with OF2222s installed on their 3.5L V6 engines. As for the Champ PH2808 filter car51 posted, it's most likely that the OF4622 is now packaged as a Fram PH6607 with a different paint job.

^^^That explains the use of the downsized 4622, 6607/14612 equivalent. As noted common practice with quick lubes to downsize to the shorty.

As for linked Champ Labs 2808, just posted it to show another example of a previous Champ made filter that had metal endcaps changing over to Fram fiber endcap construction like the topic filter. The 2808 is the larger/wider 14459/3593a/9688/51334 equivalent that is spec'd on many/most older (pre2001-02) Hondas.

Why waste it? Plenty of used Extra Guards cut open on this site--nothing to learn in cutting open a new one.

Since I decided to put a muffler cutter on that filter I took out, here are the photos that will surprise you as much as it surprised me:

I'm sure that answers your questions as much as it answered mine.

Intersting how yours has cardboard end caps, whereas the one Farmer cut had metal end caps.

Yours was made 11/30/15
Farmer's was made 8/9/15

Looks like it held up just fine. Interesting that they used the metal crimped pleat, and not the glued seam.

Could it be a capacity problem at the various manufacturing facilities? And they just send the order to what ever plant has the capacity to make it, and that's why we are seeing this happen?

Knowing the car was a hybrid when I performed the oil change based on Honda's maintenance reminder system and the usage of 0w20 synthetic motor oil, I'm not surprised.

Since I had a hard time getting the images to display properly because I used a Windows XP PC to upload with, here's a repost of the image I took today after I used a muffler cutter because I didn't realize I didn't have a pair of tin snips in my toolbox:
