I bought a set of OEM brake pads (manufactured by Akebono) at the Subaru dealer, and when I got home and took a close look at the contents of the box, I noticed a slight fishy smell. Strange.

First time I bought Schaeffer's ATF it was BAD for that. I put 12 quarts in my car and my garage smelled like a fish packing plant. By the time I went back and got more several years later, they had reformulated it and its not noticeable any more.

Serious answer - it's probably the binder resin or an additive to the friction material. Most friction will use phenolic resins and many brake pads do have a tiny bit of rubber in them.

If you look at the MSDS for friction, it's a whole laundry list of chemicals.
