Kendall GT synthetic Blend or Valvoline syn blend

I'm surprised at all the plugs for Kendall, I was under the impression that MaxLife is pretty much the most popular synthetic blend here on BITOG.

It truly is some good stuff. Performs well over a long time, and keeps the valvetrain quiet and engine clean. Just my personal experience with it. If I had to pick one oil in a naturally aspirated or low pressure turbo engine once and for all - Kendall HM blend would be definitely considered. BTW - How do you like the PU 0w40 in the 2JZ? Mine seems to like it, just wanna see how your does. How is oil consumption with it? Thanks

Like KCJeep, I'm also a big fan of Syn-blends (semi-synthetics), a nice balanced product for many applications and usually at a good price.

Honourable mention to Valvoline ML / DuraBlend, Castrol Magnatec and Kendall GT-1, but many others too.

Here is a used oil analysis (UOA) from a person who did 100,000 miles, changing every 10,000 miles with Kendall GT-1 synblend. It looks like a very good UOA to me.

My last OCI was Valvoline DuraBlend, I'm running full synthetic Shell this OCI, I'm thinking of going to Kendall GT-1 for my next OCI.

Not entirely true. Kendall GT synthetic blend is a API SN/GF-5 PCMO blend. It along with Trop Artic, 76, and Motorcraft blend from CP that are the equivalents of PYB, QSAD, Havoline, Chevron Supreme, Mobil 5000, VWB, and ect conventionals from other PCMO'S. CP decided with the introduction of ISLAC GF-4 many moons ago to meet specs it is more cost effective to blend in GRP III basestocks from SK with GRP II and market their products as a "synthetic blend".

Notice Kendall "synthetic blend" passes GF-5 NOAK with 13.5% and has a rather high ASTM D5298 viscosity compared to other SN/GF-5 "conventionals"

In other words CP synthetic blends are nothing more than API SN/GF-5 products. Not a step up nor a step down.

Maxlife meets DEXOS 1 Kendall would not.

I was hesitant to use it at first since my valve cover seemed to be leaking, but I tightened the bolts and that seems to have taken care of most of it. Maybe one day I'll get around to actually changing out the gaskets but it's such a PITA.

Overall the PU 0W-40 runs extremely smoothly. Only 500 miles or so on the oil since I only need to drive a few days a week as most everything is within walking distance, but I do take a highway trip to check in on the parents every weekend and get the oil up to temp. I was following your previous thread about oil consumption so I'll make sure to check it around 700, but so far the level has stayed right at the full mark. Oil color is great but that's to be expected with only 500 miles. Any additional consumption or anything else you've noticed on your engine?

Yes, Kendall do make a 5W-30 Dexos oil. Plus many non-Dexos oils that are SN & GF-5.

I prefer Valvoline DuraBlend or MaxLife for syn blends, but the Kendall is good also & both will be great for 5,000 mile oil changes. Pennzoil Gold is another solid syn blend to look into, 50% synthetic.

Then you must add the disclaimer. Kendall GT synthetic DEXOS blend, because Kendall GT synthetic blend is not the same.

You're right about the valve cover there. Major PITA... Mine was leaking near firewall on exhaust side. Tighter bolts took care of it for now as well. No more unexpected consumption, and I check the level every gas fill up or sooner. So far so good.

Whoosh…..

Yes the GT-1 5W-30 Syn-Blend, has a HTHS of 3.1, SA of 0.96, TBN of 8.0, 100 ppm of Ti and 850 ppm of Zn.
The GT-1 Full Syn 5W-30 has HTHS of 3.0, SA of 1.02, TBN of 8.6, 100ppm of Ti and 850 ppm of Zn.
The GT-1 Dexos 5W-30 has a HTHS of 3.2, SA of 0.92, TBN of 7.9, 850 ppm Zn and No Titanium !!

They all have their good points. I like high HTHS and high TBN and the special Ti additive and the Dexos spec., in a full synthetic oil, but you can't get them altogether. Probably because it pushes the Sulphated Ash over the Dexos limit.

I would happily use any of the three listed, but my personal pick would be the GT-1 full synthetic 10W-30 with HTHS of 3.1, SA of 0.96, TBN of 8.0, 100ppm Ti and 850 ppm Zn. But I live in a warm climate, so 10W is fine for me.

Here is a link the the Valvoline Maxlife data, also a very good oil.
