Hey.

Just picked up a can with the smart straw and along the lines of Not for Sale in California were written/printed n the can...

I have noticed the stuff seeming toxic lately- but I have not used it as much as I used to.

I bought some yesterday at Lowes. They have a huge selection of WD-40 and they also have the new WD-40 spray gel which I used on my sticky throttle cable. By the way, the stuff works great!!!

It's due to CARB:

Dear Valued Customer:

Important Information Regarding the Sale of WD-40 Multi-Use Product in California
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has ruled that any product classified as a multi-purpose lubricant must have a VOC (volatile organic compound) level of 25% or less effective with a manufacturing date after December 31, 2013 in order to be sold in California.* To comply with this regulation, the WD-40 Company will begin to manufacture 25% VOC compliant product for sale in California as of January 1, 2014. Since we do not foresee other states moving to this stringent legislation and to minimize any price impact on our customers and consumers, we will continue to sell our current formula in the remaining 49 states. This product will be labeled as “not for sale in California.” Product produced prior to January 1, 2014 may continue to be shipped and sold in California for a three year period ending December 31, 2016.

Products Involved
The following WD-40 Multi-Use Products will be converted to the lower VOC formula for sale in California:
- 3oz.
- 8oz. Smart Straw
- 11oz. Smart Straw
- 12oz. Smart Straw
- 16oz. Industrial
- 18oz. Big Blast
- 20oz Trigger Pro
- 1 Gallon
- 5 Gallon
- 55 gallon drum

All other WD-40 Company products including WD-40 Specialist, WD-40 No-Mess Pen and 3IO brand are either already 50 state compliant or do not fall under this regulation.

Pricing
The WD-40 Company has worked diligently to minimize the cost impact of this formulation change. While there are cost implications to the lower VOC formula, the WD-40 Company has chosen to absorb these costs. At this time there will be no price increase for the lower VOC formula and we will maintain national pricing.

Performance
The performance of the new WD-40 25% VOC formula has been shown to be equal to the current formula in both laboratory and consumer testing.

Timing
The first shipment of the lower VOC formula is expected sometime after January 1, 2014. However, since there is a three year sell through period for the current higher VOC product, the WD-40 Company will continue to ship the current formulation to California during this transition. Your Sales representative will be in touch with you regarding specific timing for your account.

In our area the Mennonites use it directly on their skin for treatment of arthritis, they swear by it!

If the stuff came in a flat black can, they'd buy even more

WD-40 is used with crushed tablets of whatever medication is being used. A very light coating of WD-40 is applied to the skin followed by the application of the powdered medication and a final coat of WD-40 sprayed on top of all that and rubbed in.

This all sounds dangerous or at least poisonous but there are people that claim simple aspirin used like this relieves joint pain better than pain meds prescribed by doctors that may also be dangerous. This practice has been going on for decades and I have not heard of any problems caused by WD-40. This all goes against common sense but it's popular and continues.

In California we're waiting for more legislation regarding WD-40. As you know, it's a California company that employs people, manufacturers products and makes a profit. They actually take advantage of ordinary citizens by enticing them to go to work to produce a profit for the rich owners while only getting a paycheck, benefits and the ability to participate in a retirement program with contributions from the company. In California this is considered abuse of the worst kind and must be stopped. We're depending on our legislators to protect us and chase these scoundrels out of San Diego county just like they did with Buck Knives and many other monster companies run by greedy people seeking to make a profit while tricking people into working for a paycheck when California will pay them not to work.

California has a bunch of VOC regulations for things such as charcoal lighter fluid and windshield washer fluid with methanol. Most of California is not considered "Type A areas" where any washer fluid containing more than 1% VOC can't be sold or can only be sold as a concentrate with instructions that it is only to be used diluted to a certain strength. They can be diluted less for use where it's freezing. The Type A areas are mostly rural where there is a likelihood of freezing temperatures in winter.

It's even specific to zip code, or even split in certain zip codes. It doesn't necessarily make sense either since all of El Dorado County is Type A, which stretches from the Sacramento metro area (rarely freezes) to South Lake Tahoe (which of course freezes every winter).

People who work for CARB only want one thing, and that's to get an even better job with a big oil co. So they make regulations like the gas can fiasco in CA. They determined how much gasoline the average household in CA had sitting in a gas can, and multiplied to come up with a very impressive number for the amount of gas evaporating in to the air. Then they figured how much gas was getting spilled when filling chainsaws and lawn mowers and multiplied that by some ficticious number and added it to the other for an even bigger number. Then they foisted a very unusual design of gas can on everybody, so gas would not evaporate as much, and foolproof lawnmower filling was surely assured. They still make you buy one of these gas cans that everybody knows are going to spill all over the place when you try and do anything. Repeal of that spill all over the place gas can law would be a better use of time. But they cannot admit doing anything wrong. Just like MTBE. CARB.

Please do not ugly up the site Netherlands guy.

"People who work for CARB only want one thing,...."

There doesn't appear to be even a slight chance that your opening statement is true, so I quit reading. I normally just ignore slander, but when it is in a topic I started....I take notice.

Just consider there are folks that devote time, money, effort and other important traits to help and better the Earth, its inhabitants and the future of the Earth and our offspring..just consider

We recently had some problems with some aerospace components manufactured in California. The problem was a process solvent was changed because it was not allowed to be used in the state of California. The new solvent was causing all kinds of yield problems, and ultimately some escaped to us. Not saying it was 100% the state's fault, but it cost this supplier dearly.

Dang JetStar, sorry to hear. It is sad it has affected aviation.

Hopefully it does not get so bad that they start having to choose between human life versus the perceived notion of a healthier environment.

It seems they can not see the forest for the tree sometime. Like they study so closely what their 'harmful pollutant measuring instrument' reads and trust it more than testimony or obvious signs, such as smog, everyone having a year round cold, or like Hinkley in Erin Brockovich.....!
