I am looking for a new bike for my 3 season 25 km ride with retired friends. Each morning from April to December we gather at dawn for our ride. I want something that will last but also be considerably lighter and faster than my 20 year old, $70 junker. I have read many reviews but would also look at alterntives. Budget is about $500 Canadian. I can get an Escape 2 for $550. I only ride on pavement.

I have a 2013 model and its real good for me. I ride pavement only. My buddy tried my bike and said it just wasn't comfortable. So I would say take it for a test ride to see if you actually like how it feels, rides, etc

I had a 2015 Escape 2, put about 850 miles in 3-4 months and sold it to a friend.

It's a great bike for the money, cheaper than 7.2 FX, lighter than 7.2 FX and replacement parts are really cheap. I regret selling the Escape but i bought a road bike (2015 Giant Defy 1).

If you only ride on pavement, I'd also recommend entry level - relaxed geometry road bike, such as Defy 3/2. I guess you would find a used one for $400-500.
