Last week, I took a girl on a bike ride down to the beach and over the mountain and we laid our bikes on the beach and I lost front shifting towards the end of the ride. It was an 11-speed Shimano 105 front shifter, and sand jammed up the mechanism. I did a WD-40 flush which got 90% of its smoothness back but it was still gritty. I then took off all the covers, flushed the mechanism out with CRC QD contact cleaner and then sprayed everything down with Penetro 90. The shifter now shifts almost as well as it was new. The local boat yard has this and Kroil in stock, I chose Penetro since it can also be used double-duty thanks to its PTFE+antimony AW.
