HI, I have a 2004 VW T5 2.5 and I have always used VW Quantum 0-30 506.01 oil because its recommended for protecting the cams in the VW R5 engine.
Even though I change the oil every 10K I still had a cam/followers failure last month at 120K.
I would like to try a good 5-40 oil something like Mobil 1 TDT but this isn't available in the UK, we only have Mobil 1 TD 0-40.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

yeh for sure dont use a xw30

i would go with an an older diesel oil that is *not* an ESP version

any older 5w40 or 0w40 that is non ESP should be good

that M1 0w40 TD looks ok to me

Definitely use a 5w40. In the US we have Mobil 1 0w40 which works great in every other TDI except for a PD. Using it will put holes in the new valve lifters in short order.

I use both Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck (aka Delvac 1) and Schaeffer 9000 5w40; both have done me well. FWIW I have 270k km on my PD Golf on the original cam & lifters.

Other options in North America would be Shell Rotella T6, Amsoil DEO, Petro-Canada Duron or Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme - all 5w40. Surely you should be able to get Mobil Delvac 1, Shell Helix Ultra or some of the Liqui Moly (Lubro Moly) 5w40 oils, Top Tec 4100 & Diesel High Tech are both 505.01 approved if that is important to you.

To me, the HTHS value, ZDDP & MoS2 content are all things I look for in a PD oil. Within reason, the higher, the better it should perform.

Thanks for your reply, the VW Quantum longlife 0-30 is not an ESP oil.
It is recommended by VW for the pre-DPF 2.5 T5 and V10 Toureg.

I had a sample tested after 10months/4000 miles:-

Fluid Condition
Viscosity @ 40 °C mm²/s 53.8
Viscosity @ 100C mm²/s 9.7
Viscosity Index 167
Ox Area Abs/cm 21.95
Nit Area Abs/cm 14.76
BN mg KOH/g 6.4

Additives
B (Boron) mg/kg 5.1
Ba (Barium) mg/kg 0.2
Ca (Calcium) mg/kg 2583
Mg (Magnesium) mg/kg 107
P (Phosphorus) mg/kg 830
S (Sulphur) mg/kg 2629
Zn (Zinc) mg/kg 1016

Since you have a Pumpe Duese engine should you be using 505.01 instead of 506.01? You may be able to get these in the UK:

Liqui Moly Diesel High Tech 5W40 (505.01).

Elf Evolution Full-Tech LSX 5W40 (505.01).

Castrol EDGE Turbo Diesel 5w40 (505.01)

My former wife used to have a 2005 VW TDi, had the PD engine, used 505.01 but eventually switched it to Mobil 1 TDT 5W40 and then Shell Rotella T6 5W40. Back then had my head into TDi technical details somewhat, but sold the car in 2012.

The 505.01 as you say is for the VAG PD engines in general on fixed servicing but not in my case.
After VW had some cam failures on the R5 2.5 and V10 5.0 engines they dropped the 505.01 on these two applications and recommended the use of the 506.01.

I have just read this from my VW Quantum 0w-30 506.01 spec sheet:-
Specifically required for R5 2.5 litre diesel engines and V10 5.0 litre diesel engines produced before 1st January 2006 on both fixed and long life servicing.

The R5 2.5 engine is the one in my VW T5 van.

You could try Mobil Delvac 1 5W40 NOT ESP version!!!
The regualr, older Delvac 1 5W40 has about 1360ppm phosphorus, 1490ppm zinc.. It is available in the UK but for some reason not in North America.

I could give that a go but the viscosity is quite a bit thicker at 102@40deg and 14.8@100deg, the VW recommended oil for my van is 55@40deg and 10.3@100deg.

The Mobile 1 TD 0-40 here in the Uk is more in the middle at 74@40deg and 13.5@100deg.

Didn't you have a BMW E70 X5?

Yes I do. I dropped it off today to have emissions deleted, "stage 1 economy + power tune", hoping for 10-20% consumption decrease. Currently using D1 LE 5W30.
Will switch to M1 0W40 when that runs out.

I have an 08 X5 3.0D.
I may give the Delvac 1 a try (in my 04 VW T5 2.5 PD) but the viscosity is quite a bit higher than what I am currently running.
I guess your Delvac 1 in the US is the same as ours?

You can buy a larger selection of Mobil oils if you buy in quantity from a wholesaler.

You can find them via Google or the Mobil site.

There was one near Southampton that I was going to buy oil from when I rented out Taxis but never did get round to buying as myself and my business partner changed direction before the Cabs were out of warranty.

I will try and dig out the name of the wholesaler, I think the minimum quantity was something like 20litres but I can't be sure as it was nearly three years ago.

One other thing Mobil 1 0w40 Turbo Diesel is the same as Mobil 1 0w40 New Life. Why they bother to rebrand it I don't know, they even remove the petrol ACEA spec from the label and just leave B3/B4.

Thanks for the info, if you do find the info of that oil supplier please let me know as I actually live in Southampton and work at Southampton container port.
I did look at Mobile 1 TD 0-40 as we don't have the TDT 5-40 in the UK.

Can you get a Shell synthetic 5w40 HDEO? Here in the USA we get great results from Shell Rotella synthetic 5w40. Shell names their oils differently outside the USA, and it might be called Rimula.

When you say In the US we have Mobil 1 0w40 which works great in every other TDI except for a PD is this a different oil to our UK mobile 1 TD 0-40?

Also has anyone used Silkoline/Fuchs Pro S 5-40? as this oil is now starting to be used in some PD engines in the UK.

Any more recommendations guys before I buy some new oil?.
I can get Mobil Delvac 5w 40 and Fuchs Pro S 5w 40 locally.
20L of Delvac is around £140 and the Fuchs is around £180.

As the VW R5 2.5 engine has a gear driven camshaft its not the quietest engine to be honest, I was hoping changing from the VW recommended 0w 30 oil to something slightly thicker may quieten it down a little.

The spec sheets & approvals look very similar. They are likely the same if not extremely similar.

I would get the Delvac 1 5w40 and be done with it.
