Open new bottle of oil, insert finger, lube gasket, install filter.

The Denso filters I use are pre lubed and have a protective wrapper over the base plate. You are right about BITOG members being anal, but it is a very interesting forum and picking *#@$ with the chickens is a big part of what makes it interesting.
