Dear Jacob,
Audi, which sells cars with precisely the same engine (1.8 Turbo) has an oil advisory on their website. You can down load the whole list from there, which lists many oils not on the one you mention. The Audi website specifically states that you can use 0-40 that meets the VW 502.00. There are several 0-40’s that have the VW502.00. Also, in my owner’s manual, it states that I can use any weight of oil suitable for my climate and driving habits as long as it meets the VW502.00. Would you like to list the climates 0-40 is not suited for? So, are you going to issue an addendum to all the VW owner’s manuals?
It would be interesting to hear an engineer from VW say why an oil that meets the VW502.00 in the weight of 0-40 (which flows better at low temperature) is unsuitable for use.
Please be advised that a copy of this letter, and the Audi information, and the conversation with VW online is available for public reading on bobistheoilguy.com.
Perhaps you would like to go that site and explain why whenever an oil becomes available at regular car parts stores, it suddenly is no longer on your list?
Sincerely,
Jack N. Atherton

Dear Mr. Atherton,
Thank you for your patience while my colleague and I looked into your concerns with the oil for your Passat.
We confirmed that, as it is not on the approved list of oils for VW vehicles provided in TSB 17 14 04, using the oil with a viscosity rating of 0-40 you purchased could potentially hamper your Passat’s performance, or even lead to engine damage. As this would be considered an outside influence, we would not be able to cover any damage found to be the result of inappropriate oil usage under warranty.
I understand you have been having some difficulty finding oils in your area which meet our specifications, so I spoke with Lithia VW of Reno. They confirmed that their parts department carries oil which is healthy for your car’s engine, and can even run your VIN to show you which would be best to use.
You can give them a call at (775) 852-3300.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel welcome to reply to this email, or to give me a call at (800) 822-8987.
I wish you many miles of fun, carefree driving.
Sincerely,
