I am using Purolator L14612 for a 2003 Mazda Protege. I would like to use a bigger size fliter. What filter can I use? Thanks.

L14610 is 1/2" longer if you have room.
L14459 is the same length but wider.
(used on lots of hondas with lower relief pressure)
L24458 is longer and wider.
All three have the same thread and same diameter for the gasket and have been spec'd for older Mazda's. The L14459 is the same as the stp value craft 3593 at autozone and Bosch 3323.

I use all of them with ok results except your L14612 on a B2200 but I have lots of room. I just can't buy a filter that small.

I'm using the v-6 size filter from Wix.(51356)??? I've tried Wix 51334, 51344, and 51347. I can't go larger without rattling starts, cuz the silly engineers put the filter somewhat open-end-down. Even with a good ADBV, the filters drain out somewhat through the media, and the big filters take more refilling with each start. Takes too long to fill and pressurize the engine. Rattle, rattle.

Try the NapaGold instead of the Wix.

One of my filters is upsided down and the other horizontal without any startup clatter or noise.

Why? Why do you think there will be a real advantage? Any thoughs of improved engine care are just speculation, not proven by anybody. (VW did increase the size of the filter they used, but it was a factory decision.)

Any aftermarket filter maker guarantees your engine in the unlikely case of a filter failure only if you use the recommended filter for your engine.

the oem filter is so small that I just feel good about using larger size filter. I don't know that there waill be there will be a real advantage.

M204: Part of the start up noise on the M Pro is piston slap. Mine slapped from the time it was new and has not gotten worse with time. They have a very short skirt piston to improve gas mileage. My wife just turns the volume up on the radio so I won't hear it start

I don't have the filter cross references to see if what you are asking matches my experience.

When I bought a new 1991 Mercury Tracer LTS (Mazda DOHC 1.8 engine) it came with a very tiny oil filter. I don't remember the filter number, but it seems like it was a Motorcraft FL816. One of the filter companies back then did't use a filter exactly like it, they specified the same filter as the Festiva, the same as a Motorcraft FL810. So I used the Motorcraft FL810 for nearly it's entire life, and on other Tracer LTS and Escort GT equipped cars in the family. It always worked great for me.
