Bluestream, when I look at your photo blown up to full page at photobucket, there does seem to be rust developing on the scraped area and underneath the coating in several areas. Look closely and you can see brown areas breaking through the black coating.

Oil based spray. Could be corrosion X, LPS, CRC, etc. Things that dry waxy hard are ok in some spots, but any place where it can be abraded, they should be avoided (e.g. Amsoil HDMP, waxoyl, boeshield T9) unless youll be religious about topping them.

Fluid film is an intermediate, and many things have been specified to use lanolin for rust prevention in the past.

Fluid Film A seems like an interesting thing, but I assume it is cut and solvents arent good.

Correct, but its minor surface rust where the undercoating was not installed in a thick enough coat/ The picture looks like there is rust, but believe there is very little. The picture does not due justice to what i am trying to show. Also, rusty exhaust pipe in the background..

This may show a bit better. Its looking back tword the axle on the left side.

Did the general underbody of my truck with Amsoil HDMP and detailed the hidden areas (doors, frame members, inside of rockers, etc) with Fluid Film rattle cans last year. The FF is still creeping out and the HDMP seems to bead water in some unlikely spots, but definitely not everywhere.

Just used a LVHP airless paint sprayer to spray bulk FF on the underbody/etc of our other vehicle. Will be interested to observe the results. This is an older Oldsmobile with rust developing, so its a bit of a hard test!

Worked great on my '01 Ford Escort till it dropped a valve seat. I'm in the northern part of Indiana where salt is a daily issue in the winter.

A DIY option is spray cans of Fluid Film.

usually available at John Deere dealers.

If you can go into Canada, look for Krown.

Hey JC who applies your rustcheck?

I communicated with JC 3 years ago and I believe he uses the South Bend store with good results.

To slow down existing rust in my old Caravan 3 years ago, I tried Werner's in Fort Wayne. They seemed like an awesome shop, but when my rocker panels broke through from rust, they seemed to be dry inside....no rust control oil in there.

I think the treatment helped slow down pre existing rust in the door bottoms.

Unfortunately it didnt work well for me in my tests. I sprayed it at various underhood points in my saab 9-3, as various fasteners were developing surface rust. Some of the fasteners were showing rust, others were pristine. In both situations, I saw some delamination of the HDMP against the fasteners and the metal surfaces around them. The ones that were rusty previously showed further rust, indicating that protection may still allow some diffusion of moisture.

IMO, these coatings should only be used with an oil/lanolin coat over top of them, unless being used on an enclosed space where there is no risk of the HDMP type hard wax coating being damaged.

Heat also seems to be a factor, as my test was underhood.

I remember you mentioning that once before in a thread. I won't be using it any more. I decided I will be using a Cortec product next new vehicle, and I will treat my Liberty with that as well.

Yeah it's a bummer because the HDMP and similar products from Eastwood, waxoyl, etc have promise and some are easier to get.

What are the details on this new product you'll be using? Would love to hear about your technique and approach, given your background.

Here are the specs on the product.

Cortec VpCI-368 leaves a firm, wax-like film that can be removed by mineral spirits or alkaline cleaners . Typical applications include pipe coating, parts storage, underbody coating, wire rope, steel plate and machined parts. It protects carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminum and cast iron. VpCI-368 may be applied by brushing or spraying. A film thickness of at least 2-3 mils is recommended for uncovered outdoor storage. Available in 5 gallon steel pails (Cortec Product Code 12300038) or 55 gallon metal drums (Cortec Product Code 12300039). 5 gallon drum weighs 50 pounds and ships under our standard shipping rates. The 55 gallon drum must be shipped by truck. We will provide you with a freight quote before we ship this product.

Trav has used it before with excellent results, it is not cheap. I've used similar products years ago, I got a little lazy with my Jeep and went with spray bombs of the HD Metal Protector. I have zero rust and think this product will be just fine over the Amsoil product.

I plan on spray applying it, with a conventional sprayer and a good rustproofing/undercoating gun using existing openings and access points. Two coats with one week dry time between coats, then annual inspections and touch ups. IIRC this product is used for aviation as well as marine use and should hold up quite well. I want a coating I can see through, and this fits the bill nicely.

I'll buy 5 gallons of it, and either sell some off to my brother, a friend, or use it up myself.

Edit: I have one of these to apply it with:

Professional Undercoating Gun
Item #19867 Brand: Eastwood

werner's missed a spot inside a crossmember on my truck. I was thinking of trying to use a shop in syracuse that uses corrosion free, which is supposed to be better anyway. what was the shop in south bend?

Off hand I don't remember, google RRustCheck and do a location search.

I drove to Ohio and had Krown put on 2 weeks ago, it was Gus's Auto in Versails, oh.

I was thinking of using them too, but I may give the corrosion free a try. I ordered some spray cans so I could see it, and it's pretty benign stuff. clear and a mineral oils smell
