This polymer is used as a biological fluid replacement.

It is synthesized from pyrrolidone and actylene.

What is it and what is the medical term for it?

Polyvinylpyrrolidone. Not only a blood plasma expander, but a binder for some pharmaceutical tablets. (Taken by mouth.)

Well, I was hoping for a few more comments but spasm3 and Trajan pretty much nailed it early on.

This versatile biological polymer has many uses and application as our respondents have indicated.

First used under the pharmacological trade name of Periston, with a formula of C6H9NO, it was first used as a blood plasma substitute.

Other forms of this vinyl polymer are used as coatings on pharmaceutical pills.

For those interested in more pharmacological uses, see the pharmacology section in this link:

In this case I think it is only fair to award the much sought after and rare Piston Cup Lapel Pin to both respondents.
