Can you please advise why a synthetic wouldn't be fully utilised in this engine.

A synthetic would actually be better for wintertime cold starts (not that the OP would need it in AL), but you'll be topping off a lot. I used M1 TDT in my 300D when I first got it to loosen rings, but it used a lot when I did it.
 
Any 15w-40 will be fine year round for this vehicle in your climate, and likely was the most widely recommended grade according to the manual.
