In my opinion, get a Napa Gold filter. It is a great filter and inexpensive. In lieu of that, a Wix filter is just fine, too. Napa Gold's have Wix on the back of them, by the way.

John.

Here's the recomneded Wix (aka Napa Gold)

Part Number: 51393
Style: Spin-On Lube
Type: Full Flow
Media: Paper
Height: 4.820
Outer Diameter Top: 3.020
Outer Diameter Bottom: Closed
Thread Size: 3/4-16
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: 33
Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes

Gasket Diameters
Number O.D. I.D. Thk.
Attached 2.800 2.450 0.230

Good, decent sized filter.

Yup, right on the money. I went a little larger and put a 1333 (or 51333 in Wix-speak) on my 1.8T today for a little more oil capacity.

John.

OEM filters are made by either MANN or Mahle I believe. I remember seeing 30,000km printed on it. So its good for if you want to do long drains. I've used the NAPA Gold filter and its fine. Haven't used Purlators yet. Currently I'm using STP(Champion) filter in my Jetta 2.0L.

You may also use the Mann W950/4, which is a x-ref for the Wix 51333 and Napa 1333. It's VW OEM on the 1996 5-cyl Eurovan (gas engine). Buy it online for about $9.00, as it lists for a whopping $29.25 at the dealerships.
