I have a 2003 Porsche 911 C4S that is coming up for an oil change. I have been having some cold start ticking(clears once slightly warmed.

I am considering moving away from M1 0W-40 mainly due to comments from other on disappearance of these sounds.

First Question"
1. Should I stick with Mobil1 or move to something like Motul or JG Driven DT40?

2. Is it OK to simply move from one to the other with running eg. break-in oil(recommended by Flat6 Innovations)

Struggling with the cost factor but I strongly wonder if getting rid of the mechanical is a beneficial thing worth pursuing(with taking the engine apart that is)

Thanks for any input

The Uplanders engine ticked on Mobil 1 0w-30, went away with QSUD. It sounded very mechanical and I really didnt think it was oil related, but sure enough when I switched to QSUD the tick went away.

You are using one of the best available 0w-40s available. However if you don't like the tick try something else. Do you have pennzoil ultra 5w-40 available to you.
One of our members here, who loves M1 0w-40 tried the ultra euro 5w-40 in his bimmer and likes it very much. Maybe pm him. His screen name is overkill. Redline is also stellar however I'm not confident in its ability to do 10000 mile drains without at least a used oil analysis to be certain.
Motul makes some stellar products too,so that's also an option.
Royal purple has their euro line. It still contains synerlec in the euro line and is available in 5w-30 and 5w-40 flavours.
Whichever you choose could you please update your thread with any and all observations please. I'm interested in knowing your progress.
Thanks

I have same issue on cold start. Only with M1 I have lifter knocking.
Try Castrol 0W40, or Pennzoil Ultra 5W40.
I know in my car Castrol 0W30 works perfect. Considering 0W30 is not approved for Porsche, try 0W40. It could be same base oil. Also, Castrol 0W40 is similar to M1 when it comes to cst, HTHS, and pour point.

If I'm not mistaken PU 0w40 does not carry Porsche approval. PU 5w40 though does.

I am one of the resident Redline proponents. If you are looking at boutique oils, I personally have yet to find better, and it's one of less than a handful of oils that I have found to work equally well on track (NASA TT, GTALMS, club wheel to wheel, endurance) as on the street.
My revelatory moment was after the 20k mile post full build and custom Lysholm TS SC install, and neither I nor my friend and BMW specialist slash builder (retired Master Mechanic for BMW), Could find even the slightest sign of wear on the cam lobes or cylinder walls. That's with 9k track miles!

I aim for 5k OCI, and never exceed 7.5k.

My plan was to stick to 5K OCI and that is what the PO did as well. Will look into some of the other suggestions as I believe I do have access to the Castrol and PU 5W-40 options.

The cheap in me just rankles at the thought of $150 oil costs per change. But who knows I may still end up there. And the DT40 faithful are a convincing bunch.

For now my car will not being seeing the track but it something I may want to explore going forward - certainly winter driving!

Also, I would be curious to know the members thinking on the recommendation from Jack Raby that JG Break-in oil should be run through for 1-300 miles before then draining & refilling with DT40.

I said Castrol 0W40.

If I was driving that...ID run motul.

When I bought my parallel twin atv a few years ago, the only thing I ran was motul double ester. It was 22$ a quart at the time. I never once felt cheated.

When switching from amsoil to motul, the radiant heat coming off the block plummeted. Red inner calves disappeared. My fan rarely cycled. It was insane how much of a difference it made.

I'm a firm believer in their products, especially in abusive apps.

make sure the oil you use is a vw50700 spec on it.i agree with Suzuki, using red line /motul mix my heater fan never comes on!!both are a great oil

What in the world VW 507.00 has to do with Porsche 911?
Spec that he needs is Porsche A40.

The current Motul 300V Ester Core line is very good, BUT, they lowered the starting TBNs across the board on these, so they may no longer be considered 'long drain' oils (like the older, higher starting TBN, Double Ester versions were), and more like a low detergent, 'race' oil now.

IF this is not a factor, or concern of yours, then their Trophy 0W-40 is a GREAT oil (as is Red Line's 0W-40).

Still no opinions whether a clean out is necessary with a mineral based oil(Joe Gibbs BR30, for example)? To avoid "cross-pollination" of oils. My bias is that it is not necessary but what do I know?

Also is there an up to date list if A40 (Porsche-approved) oils? The best I could do was from a couple of years ago.

You do not need that.
Just get some Castrol 0W40, or PU 5W40...
