I'd like to get people's opinions on their experiences with Supertech oils in their pickups. I have an '06 F150 with the 4.6 that I always feed synthetics. I am on a tighter budget now and would like to try the SuperTech synthetic but would like to hear what people who have used it think of it...

Thanks,

Mike

There should be tons of info here at Bob's. I have used plenty of ST oil with good success but, not in a truck(if it matters!)

I used ST conventional in my F150 with 5.4. I have used it in my Saturn, T&C, and Pilot. Never a problem, if it has a current API starburst then use it without hesitation. If I bought a new $50k car I would use it.

My Saturn lived on SuperTech most of its life. I consistently got around 36 MPG on it and the engine was whisper quiet. I used Royal Purple for awhile and never broke 34, plus the engine was noisier. I switched to Mobil1 0w-30 and got my MPG back, but the engine was still noisy.

This was the WPP kind of SuperTech, not the Citgo kind. (I understand SuperTech can also be Mobil in some markets.)

If you want "SuperTech on steroids", get some Mag1.

I have a tendency to do this, however, there is nothing wrong with ST oil. I have used it before in vehicles, it meets the same standards and it works as well as any other comparable type oil.

Funny this came up. I thought about asking the same question a little while back. My '97 PSD has always had a diet of Delo but for some reason, I couldn't find any last month at WM. I found it at O'Reillys, but it was 18 bucks a gallon and they only had two. The guy wouldn't price match either since all I could show him on the Delo was the "internet" price on my phone. I explained that the price is what they sell it for in their store, but no dice. So, for $10.74 a gallon, I got the ST 15w-40 and figured 3k miles couldn't hurt anything. I changed oil/filter and drove the truck for 200 miles before a bearing spun and sheared the crank!!

Just kidding, but seriously, the truck has been running just fine, is getting 17 mpg (up from 15) and idles smooth. I don't know if the oil change had anything to do with the mpg increase. I will go back to Delo on this next change just because it is readily available again and only $0.50 more than ST 15w-40 per gallon. I think it's probably a good oil and wouldn't hurt anything. If my original oil was unavailable, I would run it with no concerns. I checked it yesterday after 2k miles and I can see through it and it is super clean. So, take it for what it's worth.

On a side note, does anyone know who makes this oil? I am sure it isn't an entity unto itself. It's gotta be Chevron/Mobil/Rotella generic or something like that.

I keep my vericles forever (they date 74, 84 and 2007 and I have attained 500k on an engine in the past) I always use the cheapest approved oil, more often than not it has been ST.
I have never had lubrication related issues.

In Canada ST used to be made from recycled oil made by Safetykleen (as far as I know)

I've had great success from ST oils, as my recent gasser UOAs can attest. And I push them WAY farther than most folks would ever dream or dare.

Unless someone just hands me free brand-name lube, I'll probably always get ST or bargain sale oil from now on. I'm not talking about sketchy cheap no-name non-approved stuff. But house brands (ST, AZ, AAP, Napa, OR, farm chain brands) are just fine by me. They perform as well as much more expensive alternatives, and I have real world proof to show this claim is true.

If you're on a budget, you mind as well switch to conventional. Pep boys will have a black friday sale of 5 quarts of oil with filter for $10 and there's a limit of 2 per brand I think so you could get 6 if you needed to.

In fact, it went on today, and continues on Sunday.
From what I could see, Castrol conventional is the only oil they offer this on, and I don't know if it includes HDEO. Also, the oil filter is an orange Fram, I know many people don't use them here.

I don't see it listed in my local ad. Also the oil filter in the Black Friday ad is a Purolator Classic which is considered a decent filter. The ad has Castrol, Penzoil and Quaker State which is at $9 for 5 quarts and filter after rebate. Last year was better, only $8. But last year I had a big stash of free oil and now I'm down to just a couple 5 quart jugs.

I may not be in the ad, but $10 for 5qt for Castrol and a Fram is very real for this weekend.

But one big advantage: There is no rebate! Just bring 5qt of oil and the right filter, and they charge you $10 right on the spot!

I think Sunday is the last day for this.

I had a 2002 F150 w/ a 5.4 and took it to 240,000 miles before I sold it. I always used the cheapest 5W-20 DINO oil and filter and changed it at >5,000 miles. Oil type was almost always ST or Halvoline (EXPRESS would change & filter for $19.99). When I sold it, it used a quart every 3,000 miles but I never added oil between changes.

Obviously it never had any problems with ST or Halvoline.

Buy the cheapest DINO and change it once every other blue moon and it will be fine. I don't believe synthetic would have done any better here.

At a 5k mile interval ST Syn gave results just as good as Amsoil (or VWB for that matter) when tested in both our vehicles. There is also a minivan on here somewhere that went 200k on ST Syn with no issues or sludge.

You may well be referring to our Villager ...
Almost 250k miles, mostly on house brand dino lubes (ST, AAP, etc), and even with extended OCIs (10k and 15k miles in succession recently) the wear attributes and cleanliness were all well in control. The extended OCIs were run with ST 5w-30 conventional lube.

I have run ST HDEO dino lube, and was just as satified with it as any other major HDEO for use in my Dmax.
