Anyone have experience with this combo from HD, specifically the 86034 impact tool? Supposed to have about 140 ft-lb but mine was somewhere around 80. Even exchanged it for another after the repair guy said mine was defective. Second one exactly the same so I returned for refund. Of course the Ridgid toll free operator doesn't know much.

Thanks.

I have settled on Dewalt 18V tools and am happy with all of them.

Its an impact driver, not an impact wrench. You don't want to blast fasteners into the wood. How did you measure the force?

I was trying to remove lug nuts that had been tightened to 85 ft-lbs. and they wouldn't budge. After I finished the brake job, I put the lug nuts on as tight as the impact tool would allow, then used my torque wrench set to 85 ft-lbs. and all 5 lug nuts turned a bit until the wrench clicked. No scientific, but 85 is a long way from 140.

Exactly.
The impact action will not work when it is against the the added mass (weight) of a socket.
The impact driver is for driving low mass screwdriver bits.

I have this combo, but bought the units separately, years apart.
I find the Drill driver much more useful than the impact driver. But the impact driver still has it's uses

Get an impact wrench.

Thanks for all the info. Looks like I'll still loosen the lug nuts by hand.

I really liked the drill but it's expensive if bought alone, maybe I'll get another combo for construction only.

Thanks again.

If you want to remove lug nuts I suggest something like this for the job.

Your Rigid is for screws and bolts. Otherwise you'd have to buy a matco or something designed for automotive use.
