Went to Oreillys today to see if they had any Amsoil on sale like some others have had, saw that they had Quaker State Q Horsepower 10w30 on sale for 7.99 nice try Oreillys. I talked to the counter guy and he tried to sell me the same filter for our Impala and Silverado. I know these don't use the same filter, are they really that bad or is their computer system that bad? Lost a lot of faith in Oreillys.

Not all stores sell Amsoil, it usually is just a local thing. The ones by me do not carry it.

As far as their filter listings, we use them for competitive brand cars and they have always seemed to work.

Scan the boards here,O'Reillys seems to be staffed by no nothings that could care less. Now that they are expanding their dynasty into New England, more people can experience the "Irish curse"....lol

O'Reilly's is no worse than any other auto parts chain.
I made quite a few visits to local O'Rs during the five off five promo and I found the counter staff to be as helpful and as knowledgeable as those at AZ or AAP.
Some of these guys really do know their stuff, while some are pretty clueless.
If you want to start a debate with most counter people at most parts stores, just ask them what they think of your choice of oil.

Not really a Amsoil user. Just trying to find it on the cheap to tryout. I did go to Farm and Fleet and picked up 3 jugs of VWB for 13.99 a jug. Not tbe best deal but my stash needed it

I like O'Reilly's as they always seem to have a killer deal. For example, in 2012 they had 5qts of Mobil Super 5000 w/filter for $9.99 ($4.99 after MIR). This year's $5 of $5 allowed me to purchase 36 qts of Chevron Supreme HM oil (which they had on closeout for $1.99 qt) and 20 qts of Kendall GT-1 (on closeout for $2.79 qt) for pennies per qt (as well as 114 qts of various other oils). And right now they have Pennzoil Platinum on closeout (5W20) for $2.57 qt.

I disagree with NHGUY and agree with fdcg27. Some of the counter people really do know their stuff and are really friendly and helpful. Some are not. No different than the members on this forum if you really think about it. hahaha

I got around 70 quarts of Valvoline NextGen Maxlife 10w40 for 1.99 with those coupons, I paid around .35 cents each quart after tax. I also got 25 or 30 Chevron quarts and 8 Mobil HM.

I usually get good answers about what I need right here and online, I wrote down what part number(s) I need and if possible order online to pick up in-store.

I used to work for the Irish parts slingers back in 2010 when I lost my job and needed to get by so I wouldn't have to starve or live on uncle sam. They go by the computer system, and its not the best by far. I hated the system. Most of the guys there had no automotive experience before being parts guys. But where I was they did not pay well enough to really attract good and knowledgeable parts people. Besides me, the only guy with any repair experience was a guy who was in trade school for autobody.

For 8 to 9 bucks an hour in this area, don't expect anyone to be an automotive Einstein.

I've worked at JCPenny auto, Montgomery Ward auto, Autozone, O'Reilly and others. The real problem is that the corporations are squeezing payroll and expanding hours to become retail - not commercial like an HVAC, electrical, or plumbing supplier. With NO service stations, and a growing population of young males with no father at home, the DIY crowd has gotten a lot less knowledgeable about things. The only saving grace is the internet.

In the case of ANY national chain store, as long as they keep hiring warm bodies off the street, and promoting those with more manipulative social skills, you won't get expertise. In the parts business, knowledgeable people aren't really all that socially adept - if they were, they'd be selling aluminum siding or life insurance, right? What I see are other corporate ladder climbers coming over to net another retirement - the last one I saw internally was from the MEDICAL SALES EQUIPMENT field. He had shrewd bullying tactics, knew how to belittle people to make a point, and had already risen in the chain to become a field trainer.

It's not just countermen at an auto parts store who are idiots.

I recently bought a suit at JC Penney, and opened an account for the discount. The clerk typed in the wrong zip code, my bill never reached the house for three months. All I got was a call from GE Credit complaining I wasn't paying, and they didn't fix the problem. I had to go online to correct things, wrote a letter asking to remove the charges. So far it's cost me another $100 - $25 a month - in late fees for a $67 suit on sale. I'll have to refund it to break even.

Very small typo on the part of the clerk, and corporate is just too bungling to fix it. Before anyone wants to go out on a limb and start snarking about who is working where, let's all agree that a lot of nice people are doing the best they can at their job, but nobody's perfect.

If you want a better level of service, start getting selective about who you have wait on you, and be prepared to give some respect to get some respect. The "I haven't a clue, no idea how to fix your problem" is usually reserved for arrogant high maintenance customers who are demanding service above and beyond. I've seen it done for years by dozens of others, and frankly, it speeds up the line at the counter pretty quickly. How did I learn about it?

I was the guy. After a few brushes with "Can't help you, sorry" I found someone who would give me a minute to hear my request, and continued to go back to that one guy, to the obvious and clear relief of his fellow workers.

Now I work with him and try to shield him from it as much as possible, but there's just too many now who wont' have anyone else wait on them. And being at the same location four years, I'm starting to pick up a crowd, too. It doesn't hurt to have a Bachelors in Mgt Tech, Asc in Auto Tech. But, note carefully - I'm still on the front counter. Knowledge of car tech means nothing in store management or corporate politics, those are something else entirely. But management does know how to keep employees in a productive position - simply do not promote them, keep their nose to the grindstone.

So, be prepared - as a chain gets bigger in size, they get a different corporate culture, and it becomes a lot like all the others. For someone to get into a better position, they have to move off the counter, and there are no skilled experienced workers to replace them. As the career field itself ages, there is less incentive to enter it - and the people getting hired into it are selected for their sales skills in getting another item on the ticket - NOT in diagnosing or understanding automotive drive trains.

It's not going to get any better, so if you do find a competent counterman, don't abuse him, he has less incentive every day to stay on as it is. With a 25 cent a year raise not even matching inflation, the average counterman earns less than a new PFC in the Army. So, don't expect things to get better, because simple economics shows it can't. Corporations aren't hiring the people YOU want to have to wait on you - because they want profit, and you want the Low Price Guaranteed.

So, you are getting exactly what you pay for.

So what your definition and some examples of how a competent couterman gets "abused" by customers?

Example one...wasting his time with inane questions thereby lowering his commission paycheck.

When I was a counterman, there were a select few customers I "married" and would help. All 10-12 of them were good for 1-5k a month in sales. If I know I'll make 20-30$ off your visit...ID be a fool not to help you from time to time.

There's a reason my numbers were 2-3x that of my coworkers. Alas, I refused to kiss managerial backside, was asked to do something dangerous that wasn't in my job description, refused, and the good for nothing manager thought he would establish his position by belittling me in front of customers. After he picked up the shattered pieces of his Psyche and self esteem from that backfire, he confronted me in the back with the threat of being sent home. I explained the reality, the dealership would miss my numbers more than my bank account would miss the paltry sums they called a paycheck. He contemplated taking a swing at me, then realized that would likely lead to him being a hospital, and he walked off. Didn't even have the balls to fire me.

I quit ten minutes later, leaving him with a very dedicated employee...and a bunch of idiots.

Literally everyone has quit since then...except the one lady. The idiot? He's been promoted...twice.

The moral of the story is that a counter job is like any other lowpaying job. It's primarily idiots, with the occasional knowledgeable person who's destined to leave.

Some aftermarket filter companies are trying to make one filter fit multiple applications, however, I almost always see this in quick lube filters. This may be why you get one filter that fits 2 different apps.

Another thing that may happen is a counter man typing the wrong info in their computer.

The threads arent even close to matching. I asked him twice to see and he just said yeah theyre the same i said ok and walked out.

It's always a good idea to look it up yourself beforehand, know your part numbers before you go get it. Avoid return trips & screwups that way!

I do know part numbers but they won't take your word for it and have to look on their computers.

Just a note about Amsoil in stores..

Any company that has more than 15 stores are not to have Amsoil..

This is per dealer packet info..

They have a deal worked out then.. They are able to do that if contacted Amsoil corporate offices.. But Amsoil makes very few exceptions and that's about the limit probably of 30ish locations
