Well, at least I can report that DeWalt has made good on the warranty.

I took the DCF-610 unit to the DeWalt factory service center here in Nashville, and, since I brought the charger and batteries with the unit, the rep decided to just give me a whole new set (new driver, batteries and charger) instead of trying to fix my defective unit.

I never got a definitive answer on what was wrong with the driver; the rep said he thought it was a defective trigger switch, but I'll never know for sure.
