I know this has been covered somewhat but here goes anyways:

I grease the zerks on my silverado twice a year.
I grease the zerks on my craftsman lawn tractor 2-3 times a year.

That's it. Im 37 and up to this point ive used a grease gun that i cant find a name on it anywhere, its the 3 hands needed long lever type. Ive use all the tricks ive ever read but now it has a sorta "grinding" feeling to it when you pump it and very little grease comes out and its very hard to pump.. So im considering buying a new grease gun. MY last was a shed clean out hand me down from atleast 15 years ago a paid nothing for.

Im looking at these Harbor Freight gems. http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=grease+gun

the pistol grip has my attention and so does the air powered models.

it takes me 3-4 years or longer to empty a grease gun and need to reload it (fyi)

I cant see myself spending $50 bucks or more for a fancy named gun for the very little amount of greasing that i do.

opinions ?

I have a pistol grip grease gun. Not sure of the brand. I got it at the local Farm & Ranch supply store. I ordered a 3 ft. hose for it off of Ebay, and it works great. I used to have a hard time getting the gun where I needed it, but with the longer hose, there is no problem.

I would skip the cheap grease gun - it will give you problems for life.

I like this one: http://www.lubricationequipmentonline.com/product/K32/Flexigun-Pistol-Grease-Gun-%2814.5-oz-cartridge%29.html

In fact, it was recommended by somebody else here. Great value too.

I used an Alemite from Carquest, but I am not sure how much they cost anymore. It gives me no trouble.

I worked at places that did quick oil changes. We would get stuck with grease guns that are like manual Harbor Freight units. They would wear out in a week, doing the stuff you might do over 2 years.

If you go cheap, you just pay more over the long term.

I have a super cheap grease gun with the cheapest & lowest quality grease in it, the lucas stuff, "fortified with anti-seize". Yes, I believed the advertising years and years ago.
Today, that lucas grease simply greases the bearings on my 40yr old push cart that I use to move garbage. Also used it to lube the ball bearings on a kids bike.
I'd never trust it for anything beyond that.
And someday when it either:
1) get used up
2) drips all out on the floor, which it does all day/nite
3) I get tired of it and toss it out

I'll buy a worthwhile cartridge! Probably Mobil-1 this time! I have 2 more Synpower cartridges, I can't find them anywhere, and I'd rather go full syn vs. semi-syn.

I use an old Alemite gun that I bought years ago. I remember that it wasn't cheap, but it is well worth its price. It makes a bunch of pressure that will blow through most clogged fittings. I've never gotten good service from a cheapy grease gun.

Been using the harbor freight pistol grip gun for about 6mo with good success. No idea how well it'll hold up in the long run but for $9 so far it'd been great!

I got mine from Carquest also. Mine has the one hand pump. It's about 20 years old now.

Same here, I rarely use mine. I can't figure out what kind of 'problems' you can have with a grease gun, they're such simple devices. For average joe that uses it a few times a year like yourself - just rock a cheap one. I've had mine for 6-7 years and it works fine, and is only just recently on it's 2nd grease tube. Mine is like this one:

The reason I got my Carquest gun was because I was tired of grease guns that wouldn't hold good pressure and work like they should. Get a good grease gun. They're not that expensive. You'll be using the same grease gun 20 years from now.

+1

There are only a few really decent guns on the market now. One is the MacNaught someone posted a link to, very good quality made in Australia.
There are a few Euro guns like Wanner but they cost a lot more $$$

The other good guns like Lincoln and Alemite have gone the way of the dino, they are now made in China or even worse India. You might as well just label them HF, look for a nice used one.

The difference between a good gun and a cheap piece of junk is like night and day when you want to pump #2 at 30f

I threw caution to the wind and used a 20% off coupon at harbor freight for there single hand grease gun...LOVE IT !! i didnt realize what a POS PITA my old grease gun was untill i got this one, I did the front of my Silverado, i did my mower, i did my Polaris Ranger.. anything with a zerk !! easy to use, i loaded it with Valvoline semi syth high pressure muti purpose lithium grease and WOW, im fully impressed.

They did not give you 20% off of the $9.00 coupon price for that, did they (i.e.; honor BOTH coupons on the same purchase)??!

Im not sure (to be completely honest) Id have to look at my reciept. I had my wife buy a handfull of thing and i bought a handfull so we could take advantage of two coupons.. either way, it was not expensive and it works great (so far) Im pleased with it.

Good stuff to know, thanks. I'm tempted to buy two of the HF pistol grips, as the only things I need to do are the fittings on my truck, and, ever a slave to the FSM, I need two different greases (with and without moly). [Moly for the driveshaft, non-moly for U joints, and, after reading up on why two different greases, it's vastly easier to just go by the FSM and have two pumps.]
