Whats the Hot radar these days. I was thinking 9500ix but over 400$ something has to be comparable at a little cheaper.

Look into Beltronics. They are made by Escort and use the same main boards but usually come with different features, sometimes more. I used to have the passport 8500 then traded it in to Escort for some money off my Beltronics. I got the RX65 which is the same board as the 8500 but IMO, is nicer. Plus almost all accessories are compatible.

Also, since you are "well traveled" lol, most window mount radar detectors are about the same as far as what they can ddetect, be it cheap or expensive. If you get hit with speed cams (which most state patrol cars use along with laser) you are screwed at that point anyway. But i'm sure you know that. The more money, the more things they can do.

Unless you're buying a Valentine One or a high quality Escort Passport series (high sensitivity chipsets a must), you're pretty much just buying an indicator that tells you "too late, you're screwed!". Sounds like there's plenty of Passport "rebrands" out there though, so I'd suggest looking into it as posted above.

Instant on radar is a fickle mistress to defend against though.

Check reviews online and anyone seeing this topic; please keep in mind; most radar/laser detectors rely on picking up reflections and signals as cops pick at other cars for speeds. They're also okay for picking up constant radar (re: cops lazily watching the speed display as traffic wanders by).

With instant on radar/laser, if you're the only car leading the pack and you approach a hidden speed trap, you're pretty much boned in most counties.

Ever heard of Yupiteru? I have one for more than 10 years and it's still going strong. What I love about it are the facts that is compact, has an internal battery and a solar panel so no more ugly cables all over the dashboard.

Good luck during rush hour with that. Around here you wouldn't be able to get out of the slow vehicle lane w/o going over. When I drive the limit I find it more frustrating than going over, what with high speed EZPass being in the left side, left lane exits, people who can't merge, etc. YMMV. Not every region is the same.

Lately I've been driving the backroads to work, avoiding the highway, for the boost in mpg (shorter too). Costs more time, though, but I find it easier to do the limit there.

Around here you won't get a ticket for less than 10 MPH over, not enough revenue. If you are going faster than that you deserve a ticket.

That's a sore subject...

My V1 works best where there are speed traps, for example, where the speed limit on a wide, safe road drops from 45 MPH to 25 MPH. With a cop parked on a side-road trying to catch folks.

Who doesn't think that often, traffic enforcement isn't a revenue source?

More often than not, the Traffic Gestapo ticket cars with out-of-state plates. Less likely to be contested.

And if there's a crowd and lots going in "the flow", theres very little chance that you'll get picked out and pulled over, making the need fairly irrelevant.

If you're the fastest guy on the road, pulling in front of everyone, weaving, and breaking the general flow, then it's a different story...

Agreed. I've managed this long w/o one, and am not going to spend the money on one.

It's why I don't mind driving at the tail end of rush hour. The slowdowns are over, yet it's still moving. Make good time. Usually when I'm outside of rush hour, I'm on a long trip--and outside my usual haunts--so I pedal back. Well, at least try. Thankfully, the limits rise the further south I go.
