It was slammed into the wall at Le Mans--knocked out after six hours. In practice, it was in a wreck with a Porche GTC at the 2012 Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, but was rebuild in time for the green flag. It ended up fifth after starting dead last. Billed as half the weight, half the fuel, half the tires, and just as fast. Now it comes out that the 'Nissan engine' is actually a Cruze four cyl. built by England's RAy Mallck Engineering. It does have a Nissan Juke throttle body, however.

Well, that's not saying a lot considering how specialized those race engines are. It might share engine families with a WTCC Cruze 1.6l turbo, but that's not a whole lot.

Neat information that the "Nissan" engine started life wearing a bowtie, though!

I can't believe how sloppy automotive journalists are these days.... The engine is actually a purpose built to FIA specs Global Racing Engine (GRE) that was first fitted into the WTCC Cruze race car. Nothing to do with Chevrolet, RML designed and engineered the block, heads, etc. This started life as a potential F1 Engine that Bernie was pushing hard for a 1.6 4 cylinder Turbo but that was scrapped in 2011...

So it's a "checkbook engineered" engine?

Checkbook Engineering: If you write me a check, I'll put your name on the engine.

Exactly, the "Mercedes" F1 engine, that's made in England is the British Ilmor F1 engine company that Mercedes bought in steps, becoming Mercedes-Ilmor and now it's changed it's name to Mercedes-Benz High PerformanceEngines Ltd and now renamed again as Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains.
In the meantime Mario Illien of Ilmor fame have resurrected the Ilmor name as Ilmor Engineering Ltd in partnership with Roger Penske to build Indy car engines.
