iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S III

I could be wrong and they've used polycarbonate for the frame portion as well. I'm willing to accept that. But the original review I read on the device cited aluminum, and the one picture you posted showed that side piece is actually part of the frame.

So either the centre frame is aluminum, or the whole bloody thing is polycarbonate and there's no aluminum in it at all (despite what the reviews have stated) because that side portion is part of the middle portion. This is standard design practice. Though I'm used to seeing it made of aluminum (and often painted black, beige....etc to match other parts of the phone) ala various Blackberry phones.

I'm currently trying to find an X-Ray of a phone that I know has an aluminum frame and see what the contrast looks like. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. As much as I'd hate being wrong (as you appear to feel equally as strong about, LOL!!!) I'll admit it if that's the case

Fair?

They say it has an aluminum trim ring. Which, given the pictures you've posted, is impossible. Either the whole middle frame section is aluminum, or it is polycarbonate and painted to look like aluminum. Take a look at these pictures you posted and you'll see what I mean:

See the paint overspray on the 2nd one? transitioning from the "trim ring" into the main middle frame portion? They are one piece. So they are all one material. So it is either aluminum or polycarbonate, but definitely not both.

Not a phone, but a Macbook Pro (which I think we can all agree is aluminum, right?)

Pretty neat how it flies right through the aluminum to light up the other metals

Dude, the Macbook Pro isn't aluminum? Jeez... Don't you know anything...

haha, just kidding. Sorry, I had to be a part of this thread. :p

LMAO!!!

I found a neat table!!!

http://physics.nist.gov/PhysRefData/XrayMassCoef/tab3.html

Numbers relevant to this thread:

Quote:
Values of the mass attenuation coefficient, μ/ρ, and the mass energy-absorption coefficient, μen/ρ, as a function of photon energy, for elemental media. Atomic absorption edges are indicated by the shell designation.

In decreasing order of density:
82 Pb (lead)
50 Sn (tin)
29 Cu (copper)
28 Ni (nickel)
26 Fe (iron)
14 Si (silcon)
13 Al (aluminum)

Im sorry Overkill. It's plastic. Look at the photo. If it was metal, they would not need to sink those brass screw holes into the plastic at the bottom of the phone. It's all plastic.

And while the Galaxy S III is indeed made from plastic

The Samsung Galaxy S III sticks to the same plastic build
http://asia.cnet.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-46029968.htm

HTC has an advantage here, we think, with its polycarbonate unibody giving the handset a premium feel that the GS3 with its plastic chassis doesn't have.

Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S3 in fact sports a more complex polycarbonate chassis, not a 'standard' plastic body.

Despite our disappointment with the S3′s plastic construction

Normally, I would agree with you 100% on this one. However, I got to thinking for a second, and went and tore apart an old Blackberry.

This is obviously a solid chunk of aluminum. But you'll note the brass bosses for screws. Interesting eh?

I know it's hard Overkill. But it's all plastic. NO METAL.

Hmmm. The bezel is not even metal. . . . .

rim with a faux brushed metal appearance
http://www.techspot.com/review/545-samsung-galaxy-s3/

The smooth glass face with its tapered edges, the tidy silver plastic trim (real metal would again have been nice) and single central home button combine to create a tidy, premium look and feel.
http://www.trustedreviews.com/samsung-galaxy-s3_Mobile-Phone_review

Surrounding screen bezel is a plastic rim in a faux metallic finish. The result is very convincing with a brushed metallic look that gets quite close to the real thing.

The phone’s silver-colored bezel is plastic — not the metal that you might mistake it for.
http://pocketnow.com/2012/07/31/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review-verizon/

The unit I've been using has a two-tone color scheme that pairs purplish back and bezel pieces with a blue rim around the edge. Don't let the faux finish fool you. Despite their brushed aluminum appearance, most of the exterior panels are plastic.

Yea. . . . . But you can still make out the aluminum body. Unlike the S III. . . .

I've never been impressed with Samsung's build quality. I like HTC phones much more and am actually a bit baffled as to why Samsung dominates HTC in Android space. HTC phones typically look better, feel better, and Sense is nicer than Touchwiz. I just wish HTC built Nexus phones.

Thank you for the links, that confirms it. As I said, the original review I read stated aluminum.

There was no way the bezel could be aluminum and the frame not be, and there was no way the frame could be polycarbonate and the bezel not be. That was the point I made earlier about the paint and them being clearly one piece.

So there, you were right and I was wrong, it is polycarbonate (not just plastic, LOL, according to what you quoted Samsung saying earlier about the back piece and body)

But we both learned some stuff along the way, including how aluminum shows up (or doesn't) in an X-ray, which was pretty cool!

I dunno, I've heard many complaints of HTC phones melting and such. I had a buddy who's One X almost caught fire in his pocket. It freaked me out! You couldn't even touch it.

In comparison, his Samsung phones have been excellent

I've got no complaints about mine, even if it does only have a polycarbonate frame

I wonder what the density of polycarbonate is? It is interesting that Silicon is more dense than Aluminum. I knew Aluminum was different due to its low density, because as I said, we have a DR at work and there are different filters you can put on and one of them is aluminum and the X-ray tech told me about its low density. I've used the machine a few times for testing when we were setting it up (it is REALLY cool!) and so I had a few questions of course

Nothing wrong with it! That's how Samsung builds their phones so darn light and thin while cramming the best hardware in it at the same time!

Yes, it is certainly light for its size. But this blackberry frame I have here now, since I ripped it out of the phone to take pictures of it and its brass bosses (hey, learned something there too eh? LOL) is insanely light in comparison to the iPhone frame.

I have to admit, I'm a little worried about the weight reduction on the iPhone 5. I just love the weight of the 4S.

The iPhone 5 will be arriving this Friday. I will do a detailed comparison between it and the 4S with photos.

I'll be looking forward to it. There will probably be a few people who pick them up for work in the next few months, so it will be interesting to see how it stacks up/is better.
