Caterham, are you stirring the pot or just happened to point out that BMW is coming to the "Dark Side" too?

Coming to? The BMW FE spec has been around for more than 10 years.

Here is another chart...

Correction, they may be leaving the "Dark Side".
The heavier LL-01 spec' still applies to all L6 engines and turbo's not that the GP III based BMW 5W-30 is an especially heavy oil considering how much it shears in service.

Doug Hillary has pointed out that BMW are actively track/race testing 20wt oils but with the current move to high output turbo L4 and L6 engines I don't think we'll see 20wt oils any time soon.

Thanks QP.
I'm surprised to see it spec'd for the N51-N54 I6 engines.
Isn't the N54 the twin turbo?
The referenced PDF version doesn't show the same N51-N54 allowance for LL-01 FE oils.

I'm sure you're correct but it doesn't mean they couldn't be used. I don't think there are a lot of LL-01 FE oils from which to choose anyway. I remember seeing two 0W-30s that did (one was made by AGIP) but I can't put my finger on them now.
The list of European LL-01 oils is huge.
QP, have you ever seen a list of FF-01 FE oils as limited as it may be?

The first link that carwreck posted above has that list. It is a short list.

Because your engine is designed around heavy oils that meet LL-01.
Also LL-01FE will find its way thru gaskets on N62 much easier.
Get Castrol 0W40 in Wal Mart.

Too early for you to be up fool

Hope you are doing good there Captain.

Going to ski, so got up early.
Drinking my Turkish coffee and eating pastrami sandwich before hitting road:)
All good here, there?

Because they already have enough VANOS, timing chain, as valve stem seal issues in their old age.

When it was brand new, maybe.

I can work with those answers. I've been bouncing between Castrol 0W40 and M1 0W40...whatever is cheaper at Walmart. Last oil change, I added some LM MOS to attempt to cure a sweating oil pan gasket.
