What is the correct, Lycoming preferred, procedure to check the oil level in a 0-320 engine? I pull the dipstick up out of the tube enough to see the oil level, and add a quart when the level is at 6 1/2 quarts. I understand not to run the oil level below 6 quarts. Does Lycoming want the level checked with the dipstick screwed into the tube or not screwed into the tube?

I have the same question with my lawn mower. I'll ask my dad, as he flys Cessna 172's with the 0-320 engine regularly. I don't recall him screwing in the dipstick to check the reading during the preflight. I know they use Aero-Shell 20w50.

I was always taught to screw it in for a reading.

Justin, My Honda operators manual for a lawnmower, specifically says to not screw the dipstick into the tube for an accurate oil check.

With it screwed in. On an O320 or 360, I only add oil if the level is below 6. These engines are happy right around 6 quarts. Any more will be blown out. Most POHs state 5 quarts minimum but most flight schools like them at 6+.
